I'll wear some jeans

First post, yay! I am Karuk from N Cal, but was half-raised in OR with Rounders(Grand Ronde Indins). The difference between our cultures is pretty huge in some areas. For one, they are far more assimilated. Not half as much as some other tribes I've come across, but still more than I was used to. My mother was raised in a car while her AIM activist father traveled from protest to protest, and my father was raised by basket makers and medicine women. My contact with white people was minimal, despite being half white, myself. I always expected to marry a full-blood from a good family and make lots of beautiful babies with more blood than me. I didn't. All my rigid concepts of what a traditional Indian wife was supposed to be flew out the window when I met a Snoqualmie Indin man in a soldier's uniform. He had even less blood than me, but my heart didn't give a damn about his blood quantum. I loved him. I still love him. When he was stationed in Ft Campbell, I gladly went with him. My mama always told me, "a good wife goes where her husband goes." Now Ft Campbell is in Ky- and there are nothing BUT Cherokee princesses there. I couldn't find any real Indins anywhere. The one powwow I found was run by white people and charged an entrance fee. It was weird and I stuck out like a sore thumb. I was naive and out of my element in KY, but there were some comforts. The other army wives quickly embraced me as one of their own, reminding me of the way all my cousins and aunties banded together. We were always making tacos or baskets together, raising babies together, always we were around each other. The bond with these women was alot like that. When the captain's wife asked me, in the most respectful way she could manage, about my ethnicity, I told her I was Indin. This was met with squeals of delight from all those assembled. Immediately I was bombarded with questions about "Indian Money" and how much do I get? I was asked why I didn't wear feathers in my hair, and what was my spirit totem, and did I know any natural remedies for split ends? Finally, the FRG leader( I always called her the "wive's club mob boss") asked me one last question. Could my husband and I show up at her Turkey Day party in our "Indian clothes"? She said everyone else could dress like pilgrims or something and we could have a "real Thanksgiving." Now, being a rigid traditional sort with activist grandparents, my first reaction was a toss-up between educating ignorance and punching her in the boob. Instead, I agreed to her idea. We showed up in jeans and tee shirts.
