Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas earn Hall of Fame honors as largest class since 1999 is elected

Last year, not a single player was selected by baseball writers for induction into the Hall of Fame. This year, it's a different story.

Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas were announced as Hall of Famers on Wednesday, as the Baseball Writers Association of America has elected its largest Hall of Fame class since 1999. Craig Biggio, who was projected to get in, missed the cut by a very slim margin — just two votes.

To earn induction, players needed 75 percent of the vote. Maddux topped the list with 97.2 percent, followed by Glavine (91.9) and Thomas (83.7). The last time three players were elected by the BBWAA, in 1999, the nods went to George Brett, Nolan Ryan and Robin Yount.

Missing the cut this year were Biggio (74.8), Mike Piazza (62.2), Jack Morris (61.5), Jeff Bagwell (54.3) and Tim Raines (46.1). This was Morris' final year on the ballot. His divisive case — sabermetrics believers don't think he's worthy, while old-school types often do — will now be left up to the Veterans Committee in 2016.

Voters — there were 571 this year — were allowed to select 10 players from the ballot of 36, but some voters said they thought there were as many as 13 worthy players this year. That split the vote some, and ultimately hurt the numbers for Biggio, Piazza and others.

Most of the players in limbo will be back, as BBWAA voters still wrestle with the moral dilemma of enshrining players such as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, who have been linked to PEDs. Bonds received 34.7 percent of the vote, while Clemens did slightly better at 35.4. Both players dropped about two percent from their 2013 totals. One PED-linked player, Rafael Palmeiro, did drop off the ballot after getting just 4.4 percent of the vote.

Had Biggio gotten through on the BBWAA ballot, it would have been the first four-player class since 1955. That was Joe DiMaggio's class, which also included Dazzy Vance, Ted Lyons and Gabby Hartnett.

Three famous managers — Tony LaRussa, Joe Torre and Bobby Cox — were already elected for induction by the Veterans Committee, making for a robust six-member Hall of Fame class that will be honored in Cooperstown this July. All six members are alive, making it the biggest living class of Hall of Fame inductees since 1941.

Congrats to Glavine, Maddux and Thomas for making the MLB HOF.

I'm not surprised. They were outstanding pitchers, and you never heard any kind of off field garbage about them because they are decent people. I love listening to Glavin during the game commentary. He's got a great, dry sense of humor. Next year, hopefully, Smotlz will be joining. I am so ready for Opening Day.

Go Bronx Bombers!

Will miss DJ when he is gone. But the Yankees will carry on.

Derek Jeter on retirement: 'This is the right time'

TAMPA It was vintage Derek Jeter.

No tears. No cracks in his voice. No showing of emotion.

Jeter even scolded all of his New York Yankee teammates Wednesday for coming to his press conference, telling them to go back to work.

"This is not a retirement press conference,'' Jeter told the huge throng of reporters, camera men and TV crews. "I still have a season to play.''

And yes, he has another championship to win.

Jeter, 39, who announced that this will be his final season a week ago, insists he could keep playing if he desired. The ankle feels strong. The legs are good. The body feels young.

"This has nothing to do with the way I feel,'' Jeter says. "I feel great.

"I just feel the time is right after this year. There are things I want to do.

"You can't do this forever.''

Jeter never offered specifics, but did drop a hint of what may be coming next.

"I want to have a family,'' said Jeter, who has a young nephew. "That's important to me.''

Who knows the identity of Jeter's girlfriend, of if he even has a steady, but it's apparent that he'd like to get serious with someone.

He doesn't want to be drawing social security the same time his kids are walking off the stage at their high school graduation.

"I think he led us onto one a little bit,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, "and the importance of it.''

Jeter, who spoke in front of a packed room in excess of 300 reporters, players and Yankee officials, may unveil his emotions at the end of the season. The final game will be different. Jeter's closest friends believe he will openly weep when that time comes.

"I'm emotional,'' Jeter said, "but it's kind of difficult because we have a season to play. It might be different if it was the end of the year.

"I have feelings. I'm not emotionally stunted. There are feelings there. But I've been pretty good trying to hide my emotions throughout the years.

"It's not the end of the season yet.''

But when the season finally ends, Jeter knows there will be no turning back.

And he's fine by that.

He actually wanted to announce his retirement before Christmas, his friends say, but they told him to hold off. Be sure, they said. Keep playing. Why call it quits before needed.

Yet, his closest friends and teammates say, that was them being selfish.

They are the ones who don't want to see Jeter leave.

Now, after talking to him, they've never seen Jeter so convinced that it's time to leave.

It will be a fascinating year. There will be a need for press conferences in each city. There will be retirement gifts. Yet, unlike Mariano Rivera, Jeter's an everyday player. He isn't going to take time out of his preparation for meet-and-greet sessions.

There's another World Series title to win.

"I want to send all of us out on top,'' Jeter says, "not just me on top.''

The hardest job in baseball now may belong to Girardi and the Yankees front office. Now that Jeter is stepping down, fans want to see him play every day. The YES network. The MLB network. ESPN. Everyone wants him on the field for all nine innings of 162 games.

"Joe (Girardi) knows what the deal is,'' Yankees GM Brian Cashman says. "His decisions are not going to be affected by this. He certainly is not going to run him into the ground because of history.''

Girardi, who remembers what it was like last season when fans wanted to see Rivera pitch 162 games, has braced himself to be the bad guy.

"I'd hear people in the stands yelling for me to put Mo in last year,'' Girardi said. "We'd be winning, 9-1, and you'd hear people yell, "Put him in.' We drove 1,000 miles to see him.

"So I'm sure I'll hear some of that. I have to do what's the best for him and our club.''

And for now, at least, what's best is for Jeter to be the everyday shortstop and play entire games.

"My goal is when I run him out there,'' Girardi says, "to run him out there for nine innings.''

All of the way through October.

In the meantime, the most difficult ordeal of the season may not be Jeter's health, but dealing with the distractions. People want to see him. People want to talk to him. Everyone wants a part of him.

He's going to have no choice but to deal with, beginning from their opening day in Houston to the season finale in Boston.

"I don't think it'll be a distraction,'' Cashman says. "I think it creates and opportunity for people to celebrate his career. It gives a platform for fans to appreciate him every day.

"People will pay more attention to him because of historical meaning behind it.

"I don't know if he's asking for that, but it's certainly coming.''

It started Wednesday morning with about 50 fans lining up at the gates at George M. Steinbrenner Field to see if they could get a glimpse of Jeter, along with 60 cameras and TV crews awaiting his arrival.

It's only the beginning in the year-long celebration of one of the greatest Yankees of all-time.

"I'm not gone yet,'' Jeter said. "You want to be remembered as someone who played hard. The thing that means most to be is that I'll always be remembered as a Yankee.

"That's what I always wanted, to be a Yankee.

"The Steinbrenner family gave me the opportunity live my dream.

"Once you're a Yankee, you're always a Yankee.

"So being a Yankee is good enough for me.

I wasn't even going to bring up A Rod myself...glad that he is not going to be there this season. He is too much of a distraction with all the new players signed on and Jeters farewell season coming up.

Thinking now of my fave team, since 1974, before Derek Jeter signed, the Yankees only won two World Series, both with Reggie Jackson. Now with Jeter they won five more. For a total of 27.

Jeter will be missed. End of an era for sure.

We're Oakland fans over here. 2 things embedded in my memory are 1988 Kirk Gibsons gimpy homer, and 2001 Jeter's fricken flip.

The kid is definitely a class act though.

Even though its barely starting now, I am glad the MLB preseason is here.

Spring is around the corner, even if it is still snowing like crazy here at the Home of the Brave.

Go Yankees!!!

I agree. Can't wait to sit at the ballpark for the afternoon. I just wish the team would keep the same players for a couple o years. I wish the game was played like it was in the old days when players stayed with their teams for the duration of a carreer.

Moneyball works and all that, but it sucks for fans to root for certain players only to lose them the next season. I envy the Yankees for that.

The 2014 Major League Baseball season is set to begin on March 22 in Sydney, Australia between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The North American part of the season will start on March 30 and end on September 28.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game's 85th edition will be held on July 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, home of the Minnesota Twins. The winning league will once again receive home-field advantage during the World Series, something that has happened since the 2003 season.

Braves are already down two veteran pitchers and the season hasn't even started yet. Medlin and Beachy will each have a second Tommy Johns surgery-which will probably put an end to both their careers. Not many come back from that surgery a second time. sigh

Too bad. But, at least the season is real close now. The Yankees only have Jacoby Ellsbury on the DL right now. And he is slated to return soon.

Braves did a nice job honoring Aaron and his home run record before the game tonight. Man, I remember watching that on TV with my parents. My mom was going "it's gone, it's gone, IT'S GONE!" and my dad jumped up off the sofa and all he could say was "hotdamhotdamhotdam". LOL! He and I talked about that game a couple of years later, and he finally told me he got so excited because he had won $200 on a bet with some of his fishing buddies. LOL!

The 2014 MLB season is really young but so far, so good. Yanks get a triple play, Angels commit a three error in a single play. Braves almost get a no hitter early in the season. And Albert Pujols is close to 500 HR's.

Pujols has his 500 now. First guy to ever get his last 2 in the same game. Of course-why not add to all his other records. :) He's a good guy and I hope he stays in the game longer. Not real sure I like this replay deal-and that stupid transfer rule. Both need some work before the season gets much farther along.
