Wind River Reservation) – For their first time participating in the Native American Basketball Invitational, the Wind River Reservation team did extraordinarily well, they now claim the title of national champions. The team dominated the tournament which was held in Phoenix Arizona from July 11th to the 15th and brought home the trophy for the silver division bracket.

Their opponents were the “New Town” team, made up of three affiliated tribes from North Dakota. After five consecutive wins the Wind River boys won the championship game with a final score of 70 to 56.

The national tournament saw a total of 64 boys teams and 45 girls teams from every tribe in the nation. Clarence Thomas, one of the sponsors for the Wind River team, said this year they only took a boys team, but next year he plans on organizing a girls team as well and taking them to the tournament.

Clint Wagon created the team and Darrell Lone Bear was their coach. The Wind River Reservation team was made up of 10 players from both the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapahoe tribes. They also had sponsorship from Flies Away Consulting, the Eastern Shoshone Department of Juvenile Services and the Shoshone Rose Casino.

The Native American Basketball Invitational, or NABI for short, is a non profit organization. They host the largest all Native American basketball tournament in North America for high school athletes. The foundation debuted in 2003 and since then has served over 10,000 youth.
