Insensitive or Uneducated?

I am posting this from Native American Times:

What a weekend for Natives sports right?! The Umatilla Thrillas, Shoni & Jude Schimmel played OU in Norman, Oklahoma, in an OT win for Louisville. Despite questionable judging and being handed a loss, Otoe tribal member and MMA fighter, Johnny Hendricks beat the snot out of George St. Pierre so hard he can't remember one of the rounds and will likely retire. And at McAdory Highschool in Jefferson County, McCalla, Alabama, we were so honored to receive a personal invite to the second Trail of Tears! For your convenience I have attached two phone numbers to RSVP.

MaCadory High School: 1-205-379-4700
Jefferson County Congressman Spencer Bachus: (202) 225-4921

Please respond ASAP as there are only so many the Army can move at once. If you are Black and wish to get a second invite to slavery, or Jewish and were hoping for a second holocaust, you will have to wait your turn. However, you are welcome to join us, the Indians, on our long walk to wherever it is we are going to next! We are sooooo excited! yeahhh!!!

Here is the number for Pinson Valley High School, the School with actual "Indian Mascot" 205-379-5100

My Thoughts:
I know that the mascot issue has been in the news a lot lately and I have heard both sides of the issue regarding that. This Photo was taken at a High School game in Alabama on Saturday Night 16th of November 2013 and although the Board of Education posted a message on their website addressing this issue by stating the person that was responsible for checking on these signs was out on Maternity leave. They apologized in the correct way and it is done right??
What disturbs me the most, is the fact that the other school uses a mascot that is an Indian, and this school's Pep club said that they would send them on another Trail of Tears home.
To the Cherokee this was Horror at a most personal level it touched our entire tribe, where 4000 out of 16,000 Men Women and Children DIED by Starvation, Exposure and Killed by Marauding whites following the groups that were forced Marched Across Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas and Missouri. Our Bones are scattered across those States, Blood is soaked into the Ground. But to the UNEDUCATED it is merely a Slogan at a High School game Far from the Horrors inflicted By Christians On Indians. It happened 175 years long in the past it should be forgotten Right?? Move on we are different Society now right?? History should not be taught to those in our Education System right??

For History can be repeated over and over again by those that aren't educated by it!!

Followup to the Story

This was Posted today on the High School Website:

Monday, November 18, 2013

To Whom It May Concern:

On 11/15/2013 at a football game at McAdory High School, a sign was displayed that made reference to the “Trail of Tears” in which Native Americans were subjected to horrific atrocities. This was not condoned by the school administration, the Jefferson County Board of Education or the community. The person who would normally be responsible for approving such signs is out on maternity leave, and I take full responsibility that arrangements were not made to have the signs pre-approved before the ballgame. Please accept our sincere apologies to the Native American people and to anyone who was offended by the reference to an event that is a stain on our nation’s past forever.

In response to the "bust thru" sign used by McAdory High School during the Round 2 State Play-Off game versus Pinson Valley High School, all social studies and history teachers will re-teach and/or review units concerning Native American displacement following the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

Sincerely,

Tod Humphries

The mission of McAdory High School is to guide the development of all students so that they will become lifelong learners, prepared to function in an ever changing global society.

I'm thinking - Insensitive AND Uneducated!

Makes you wonder what, if any, history is being taught.

This one actually inspired me to pull my blog out of its hiatus to respond. (RestlessN8iv)

Dear Cheerleaders of McAdory High School

We would like to thank you for your gracious invitation to join you on a “trail of tears round 2”. We thank you for keeping us in mind this Native American Heritage Month. We regret to inform you however, that we will not be able to make the trip. There are several factors for why we will not be able to join you.
First of all there's really nowhere left for us to go, is there? The first trail took us across the country when your ancestors forced us out of our lands. The trail ran from Georgia to Oklahoma the entirety of which the majority of us were forced to travel on foot.
Which brings us to the second reason reason why we will not be joining you. As you know the original trail of tears claimed approximately 4,000 lives,[http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel...ic_Trail.html] as Natives now make up only 1.2 percent of the American population,
we're afraid we simply do not have those numbers to spare a second time.[http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html]
We know this is disappointing to you, but we hope you can take some solace in knowing that in some areas Native men have the lowest life expectancy in the entire western hemisphere. []Red Cloud Indian School - Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota - Red Cloud Indian School
Do not worry, our women will not be lonely without us as one in three native women will be raped (most likely by non-natives) in her lifetime. In fact, native women on average are 2.5 times more likely to be the victim of a sexual assault than any other group in the U.S. [USDOJ: Office on Violence Against Women: Tribal Communities ]
Furthermore, as we mentioned earlier the first trail of tears forced Natives to march across the country on foot which we don't think would be possible today as type two diabetes is nothing short of a epidemic among our people right now, and is only increasing. We are actually twice as likely to be diagnosed with the illness than our white neighbors. [http://www.cdc.gov/media/matte/2011/..._American.pdf]
The disease often leads to a lack of mobility in, and in many cases amputation of one or both feet. So walking is out of the question for many of us. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Also, this time of year is not really that good for us. Around thanksgiving we tend to be very busy being commercially exploited, and depicted in the media in ways that in no way resemble the event which is now known as “the first thanksgiving”.
[]Historian on the real story behind Thanksgiving - CBS News Video
Also it's almost Christmas, and we've got gifts to buy. It's still a little early, but our poverty rate is at about 27 percent. When you belong to one of only two ethnic groups who exceed the national poverty rate of 14.3 percent by more than ten percentage points you learn to take extra time and look for bargains when holiday shopping.
Otherwise we'd have plenty of time to join you Native Americans have suffered double digit unemployment rates since 2008.
[]The Unemployment Rate For Native Americans Has Been Over 10 Percent For Five Years | ThinkProgress
Again, we are sorry, but we must decline your gracious offer.

Sincerely,
- Native America
