Justin Bieber "Part Indian"?

http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwor...ree-gas-124753

Canadian Pop Star Justin Bieber Believes He’s Indian Enough to Get Free Gas

By ICTMN Staff

In the August issue of Rolling Stone, pop star Justin Bieber reveals that he believes he has Native heritage. The claim is not a central part of the article — indeed, it’s a comment so brief the writer has it in parentheses:

He’s wearing a Chicago Blackhawks cap (“I’m actually part Indian,” he says — “I think Inuit or something? I’m enough percent that in Canada I can get free gas”), a blue short-sleeved shirt and khaki shorts that hang all the way off his butt.

The “free gas” misconception is a common one, and stems from a policy described on Ontario’s Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs website:

In Ontario, there is a tax of 14.7 cents per litre on gasoline. First Nations people with a gas card do not have to pay this tax if they buy gasoline for personal use from an authorized service station on a reserve.

It is perhaps a sign of greater awareness that Bieber, the most mainstream celebrity imaginable, is being razzed by mainstream press and bloggers over these comments.

DListed, a celebrity-ridiculing site that exists for just this sort of moment, unleashes a string of digs, and concludes with the thought that Bieber “also probably thinks he doesn’t have to open his own mail because he’s a Pieces.” (Bieber’s astrological sign is Pisces.)

The Onion AV Club raises the point that ignorance from a person as famous as Bieber can be dangerous because legions of fans are likely to believe (or Beliebe as they say) whatever comes out of his mouth — sarcastically speculating that “tens of service stations could be getting ripped off across the Great White North, just because this recent high school graduate doesn’t know his own heritage.”

PopGoesTheNews points out: “Adding insult to Bieber’s ignorance, if he did indeed have Inuit ancestry, he would not be entitled to a Status Card since the Inuit are not covered by the Indian Act.”

Torso and Oblong delves into the curious chain of logic vocalized by Bieber — and so many others — who’ve been told they have Native heritage: “Invariably, the conversation then moves onto the perceived bonanza of mythical scholarships that would become available to them if they just had the documented evidence that demonstrated this ancestry. Accompanying this is the rough grumbling that their damned White genetic heritage is now a liability for getting ahead.”

And that’s perhaps the most worthwhile thing to ponder here. It’s possible that Bieber really has Indigenous heritage, and it’s clear he doesn’t know much about Native people — and neither of those things is inherently important to the average reader of Rolling Stone or ICTMN.

What might matter, or ought to matter, to both readerships is that Bieber is an 18-year-old with an estimated net worth of over $100 million, and yet even to him the concept of “Indian or Inuit” is closely tied to the concept of “free gas.”

What's even more shameful is that the Ministry of Education in the Province he comes from, does not include First Nation history schools.

Same here in Manitoulin Island, Ontario.

Only just the discount deducted to omit taxes purposes. Natives do not have to pay for taxes whether they have status card and/or gas card.

Just another perpetuated stereotype. His publicist needs to get on the ball and do some investigating, and get the FACTS out...cuz if he is descended from a First Nations tribe...I wanna know!!

(Actually my granddaughters wanna know!! ...as I'm singing, Baby Baby Baby oh Baby Baby Baby oh)

PS. The N. Arapaho tribe gives tax discounts to enrolled Natives here at their stations on the rez...the E. Shoshone approved this, but the station has yet to put it into effect...years later )

Inuit are not First Nations.

In Canada, we recognize 3 distinct groups... First Nations, Metis and Inuit.

Here's the thing about the gas tax, if ANYone wants to pay less for their gas, all they have to do is drive onto a Canadian rez that has a gas bar and buy it. The gas is not taxed and runs about 10 cents cheaper than off rez stations. Most people are too afraid to head onto a rez because they think we're all boogeymen that will scalp them.

Here in Ontario we are also issued gas cards which gives us 14% off the dollar on top of the already lower rez prices. So he can get cheaper gas but definitely not "free gas"

REALLY?? Is noone going to check these claims out?? Tommy Lee Jones' response rocks tho!

When Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber revealed in Rolling Stone that he believes he’s part Native, he wasn’t breaking new ground for a celebrity—believing or claiming to have Native ancestry is nearly as much as a celebrity-interview cliche as “…but what I really want to do is direct.” However, throwing in the comment that he thinks he could get “free gas” because of his heritage turned a perhaps-interesting detail about him into a confession of ignorance.

Many celebrities with no documented Tribal affiliation have said they’re part Native—and there’s usually little reason to doubt the sincerity of their beliefs. But there’s a difference between having an Indian ancestor and actually knowing anything about Indians. It may seem like obvious advice, but perhaps it should be the first lesson a publicist drills into a client: If you don’t know what you’re talking about, best keep your mouth shut. Here are some celebrities who have managed to discuss the Native roots they believe they possess—without pulling a Bieber.
channing tatum Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Channing Tatum (source: Wikimedia)
Channing Tatum

The list of celebrities who’ve said they have Native heritage is extremely long, and often the detail finds its way into the biography without a clear statement from the star. Such is the case with Channing Tatum, star of Magic Mike, who may be as much as a quarter Native American. In a cover feature in GQ magazine from 2009, the writer described Tatum thusly: “He’s 29. A part Native American son of a roofer who fell through a roof, broke his back, and ended up a traveling salesman, and of a mother who never doubted him.” Did Tatum say he’s Native? Presumably he did, and presumably GQ fact-checks its articles. Still, we don’t have a direct quote, much less a specific Tribal heritage.
vanessa hudgens Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Vanessa Hudgens (source: Wikimedia)
Vanessa Hudgens

In a 2006 interview, High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens was asked about her ethnicity; she answered “Gosh, I’m everything. Pretty much I’m Filipino and Caucasian but within that, I’m Spain Spanish, Chinese, American Indian, Irish. ”
anthony kiedis Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

The lead singer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers is said to be of Mohican ancestry on his mother’s side. In 2007, after the birth of his son, Everly Bear, he told People that the name had some Native significance to him: “The mama came up with Bear. … That made sense to me because he’s from me and I feel like I’m part of the bear clan, and I think it’s nice to have a little bit of earth in your name.”
megan fox Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Megan Fox (source: Wikimedia)
Megan Fox

In 2010, Megan Fox said that she’d really like to play the Apache superhero Rainmaker if the Gen 13 comic book were ever made into a movie. In slightly defensive remarks, she said she wouldn’t want “people” (presumably Indians) to “protest” if she were in the role: “She’s a Native American and I have a little bit of that blood in me. … It would be a bit of a stretch—but if Jake Gyllenhaal can be the Prince of Persia, I think that I can do that.”
johnny depp Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Johnny Depp (source: Wikimedia)

The actor playing Tonto in the movie version of The Lone Ranger (coming 2013) has been asked about his Native heritage, and answered at length for an Entertainment Weekly article: “I guess I have some Native American somewhere down the line,” he says. “My great grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek.” He also added some speculation which, had he not cited his sources, might have come off as Bieber-esque: “The interesting thing … if you find out you’ve got Native American blood, which a lot of people do, is you think about where it comes from and go back and read the great books, Dee Brown’s Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee or [John Ehle's] Trail of Tears, you have to think, somewhere along the line, I’m the product of some horrific rape. You just have that little sliver in your chemical makeup.”
taylor lautner Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Taylor Lautner (source: Wikimedia)
Taylor Lautner

It’s been well documented that many supporting actors who play Quileute Indians in the Twilight movies—Chaske Spencer, Gil Birmingham and Julia Jones, to name a few—are of Native heritage. But what about Taylor Lautner, one of the leads, who plays Quileute Jacob Black? In an interview from 2008 Comic Con, he answers the question very simply: “I have some Native American in my distant background.”
jonas brothers Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

The Jonas Brothers (source: Wikimedia)
The Jonas Brothers

Asked about their heritage during a video chat with fans, the brothers simply stated, “We’re Italian, German, Irish, Cherokee Indian.”
shannon elizabeth Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Shannon Elizabeth (source: Wikimedia)
Shannon Elizabeth

Following her rise to prominence in American Pie, actress Shannon Elizabeth (born Shannon Elizabeth Fadal) mentioned Cherokee as one of several components of her mother’s heritage. “My father is half-Syrian, my mother a mix of English, Irish, German and Cherokee,” Elizabeth said in 2000, as quoted in the Orlando Sentinel. “I guess you could say she’s a mutt, but she’s the best mom in the world.”
tommy lee jones Got Native in You? Great. Just Try to Avoid Pulling a Justin Bieber

Tommy Lee Jones (source: Wikimedia)
Tommy Lee Jones

The Oscar-winning Hollywood actor took ownership of his Indian roots as few seeming Caucasians do; in statements that ran in Cowboys & Indians magazine, he said that what he’d achieved in his life was, “Not bad for a little Indian boy. Not bad.” Jones’ claim is on his grandmother’s side; when the writer asked him what tribe she was from, Jones replied: “It’s not a tribe. It’s a nation. … The Cherokee Nation.”

I saw it as Justin is not even sure which native nation he has bloodlines from. He does not display any knowledge in First Nations history, cultures, etc. Justin does not seem to know exactly "who" he descends from.

The "free gas" is the only connection he mentions when so many more Important aspects of culture, such as Native influence on his own singing and musical talents, etc are not even touched upon.

In my daily travels, I constantly run into locally-born and raised people of many different ethnic backgrounds in Southern California that have no idea about tribal histories here, but they know how to get to the shiny new casinos, and those buffets.

Blackjack, slots, and all-you-can-eat crab legs.....billboards everywhere along our freeways showing ecstatic jackpot winners....

With Pop culture media pushing so many images....we are all getting "Biebered"

The odd thing is he was raised in a place called Stratford, Ontario... IIRC, that is Oneida territory.

So not only is his knowledge of FN sadly inadequate, his knowledge of local FN and geography is off too...

I think the "Common Denominator" is he was "Stuck in the Moment" and worried about his "Money" and the price of gas during these tough times and thinking if he can tap into his nativeness, and save some green, he'll always have "Someone to Love". Now if he could only remember what kind of NDN he was, Hmm, let's see, "Eenie Meenie"...
