Natives at the 2013 Inauguration

Natives at the 2013 Inauguration

http://www.publicinsightnetwork.org/...woman-warrior/

How did you start the Native American Women Warriors?

It’s kind of a funny story. I didn’t mean to start a color guard.

What happened was, two other Native American woman veterans and I went to the Denver March Powwow in 2010. I made us some dresses to wear: traditional-style dresses, red, white, and blue and Indian pink, and I sewed on our combat patches, ranks, the American flag, that kind of thing.

We were lining up for the grand entry, and all of a sudden the arena director comes running toward us. He hands me a tablet and says, “I need you to put your name, branch, your rank, the nation you represent, and the name of your color guard.” I stopped. I said, “I’m sorry sir, there must have been a misunderstanding. We’re not a color guard, we’re not in uniform, we don’t have flags.” He said, “But your dresses.” I said, “This is the first time we ever put these dresses on. We were just trying to show them off.”

He asked me if we had served in any campaign, and I said yes, Operation Iraqi Freedom. He said, “Okay then, we’re going to call you the Army Women’s Iraqi Freedom Veterans and we’re going to put you last in the line of color guards.”

When they announced us, he said, “History has been made today. I have the honor today to announce our first all-female color guard.” Man, the drums went wild. War cries, yelling, and we just froze. People started taking our pictures, inviting us to their powwows.

That’s how it started, and it just kept expanding. Later we changed the name to Native American Women Warriors so we didn’t discount the women from the other branches who wanted to join. Now we’ve got about 25 members in states all around the country. I’m making dresses like mad! I’ve probably sewed 30 of them at this point.

The Inaugural Parade takes place on Sunday, Jan. 21. Mitchelene BigMan and nine other Women Warriors representing every military branch but the Coast Guard will march the route in beaded moccasins; BigMan will carry the American flag.

Tribal Members Prepare For Inaugural Parade

By Erich Schaffhauser
Published: January 15, 2013, 5:18 PM

SISSETON, SD - If you plan to watch the 57th Inaugural Parade next week, expect to see some South Dakota faces.

Representatives from North Dakota tribes will walk in the parade. Since two of the reservations extend into South Dakota, some people from this state will participate too.

At the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Headquarters, you'll find people of all ages who say they're proud to represent this area in the national parade.

"It's just the idea of being invited to participate in this inaugural parade; it's a good feeling," Dayton Sea Boy said.

Sea Boy is part of a Vietnam veterans group. That's why he'll be one of 20 from the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate tribe making the trip to Washington, D.C. Other veterans and youth from the reservation will be involved as well.

"I felt a little bit of pressure because I knew I was representing everyone around me," high school junior Misty Kohl said.

But as she prepares to jump on a bus and head to the nation’s capitol Saturday, Kohl is excited and thankful for the opportunity. So is Davonte His Law, who says he's excited to catch a glimpse of the president.

Erich Schaffhauser: Do you suppose he'll pick you out of the whole crowd?
His Law: Yes, I hope so.

The veterans plan to wear a mix of military attire and traditional native dress. Sea Boy is thankful his native culture will have a national audience during the parade.

"I think it's really important to display that at times like that," Sea Boy said.

That's one outcome members of the tribe hope for as they prepare for the historic parade, but they plan to come home with much more.

"Self-respect for myself and my family and the community I live in, my tribe," Kohl said.

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, which stretches into Corson County, will also walk in the parade.

They Women Warriors were truly an amazing group. I saw them dance and speak and even took a picture of my fiance with them. Funny story, poor CBS crew kept having to run over and shut the door near where they were trying to interview them because every time the talent would ask a question someone would open the door and the sound of the drumming and singing would screw up the take. LOL
