Nova Scotia Mourns the loss of Noel Knockwood

Nova Scotians and Canadians mourn the loss of Granpa Noel who passed over on Thursday evening at his home in Nova Scotia. Noel Knockwood was my friend, mentor, role model and adopted grandfather to my children while I was posted in Nova Scotia. I shall miss him.

N.S. mourns loss of respected Mi'kmaq elder Noel Knockwood | CTV Atlantic News

Noel was known across Canada from his work with Native Justice, Native Veterans and Mi'kmaq speaker. He was a fantastic musician and loved to play his guitar and mandolin with Mi'kmaq fiddlers such as Lee Cremo. He served his country with distinction in the Korean conflict and lobbied extensively for Native Veterans and their rights. He is an Aboriginal Achievement Award recipient and Canada's first officiant to be able to conduct Native wedding ceremonies. He was the Sgt-at-Arms for the provincial legislature - a first for an Canadian Native.

He taught me to count in Mi'kmaq as well as to speak it - as he called it - "like a tourist".

A proud Native man who was a gift to us all.

With his loss is one less fluent Mi'kmaq speaker.
