Ruling on New York's Shinnecocks due by year's end

Southampton, New York (AP)

The federal government says it will make a preliminary ruling by the end of the year on whether to officially recognize Long Island's Shinnecock Indian Nation.

Recognition would give tribal leaders the right to open a casino in the famed Hamptons region. They say the casino would help improve living conditions for the tribe.
