Unto These Hills Cherokee NC

For anyone that has made the trip to Cherokee NC and went to the outdoor show Unto These Hills, I just wanted to update the drama.

The whole play has been re-wrote. The cast is all Cherokee and the Regaila is true to the times.

Unlike the drama of the past this is worth seeing.

The play starts with the creation of the world to the removal and life after the removal.

I was most impressed with the traditional Cherokee music and dance. Something you dont hear or see too often. You also see dances such as bear dance and booger dance.

I ran accross a group of around 100 cherokee youths from the Cherokee Nation in OKC and was able to talk with one of the guides. He told me that so many of these youth had no idea on what life was like for the cherokee in the 1700 & 1800s. And that they visited all the historical places in Georgia and Tenn and NC.

If you are Cherokee and have never been to the Mountains of NC the Homeland of the Cherokee you should look into making a trip sometime. Its always good to come home.

Glad to hear the drama has been improved! Especially since it seems there is more native input to it. Was there back in the 90's and watched the drama, liked the Tsali story, wasn't hip on the portrayal of Tekumtha in it (am Tsalagi and Shawnee)... am planning on going home this summer, will hopefully catch the new version when I go.

Thanks for the info.

Funny, I went last summer and was disappointed b/c the outfits were not as authentic as I thought it would and the "Eagle Dance" was not what I was expecting as it was too modern. I am very glad they've redone it. And I hope it is an even bigger success.

On another note, the village they recreated was awesome. I thouroughly enjoyed it. Unfortunately I went late in the day and I think my young, high school aged guide was a little tired. But those at the various stations were very knowledgable and were wonderful.

I really enjoy the villiage also. I guess what I enjoy the most is the setting. The whole deep mountain woods setting and the smell of the smoke always burning. Its just so relaxing walking around, And dont forget the nature trail also on the north side of the park. It normally takes about 25 minutes to walk.

This was such a wonderful place to live, Lands all good, Water clean, pleanty of flat land to farm also. I have never made it to Okc but I dont think it could ever compare.

I often wonder if the Cherokee's of the west or in Ok have any desire to return to their homeland?
