Waterboy

Does anyone still do this?

Out in CA, its not practiced, but I used to see this all the time back East.

I think its a good tradion and an important position to remeber.

Jest my two cents.

Ya'll ever see this anymore?

I remember used to seeing the water boys with their water buckets and ladle, but that was back in the 80s. I don't see that around any more. I think people don't wanna catch germs, and then they came out with those bottled water.

tsuj,

I really only see official waterboys at traditional dance ceremonies anymore. Many are listed as part of the committee and have protocol when and who to pass water to.

At the contest powwows inbetween contest songs, there are waterboys, watergirls, watermen and waterwomen who hand plastic water bottles to the dancers....

but none of them are official!

We still have an honored position of Waterboy in our Ilonshka's.

As a Powwow thing it has mostly become a thing of the past. I know that at our dance we have water coolers with cups sitting near by.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Cherosage, good to hear from you; I am happy to hear that this position exists back home at your Ilonshka's.

The health concerns make sense, its just a shame to see another Tradition go out like this, IMHO. I guess someone, somewhere decided that having them hand out waterbottles instead is not the same, and have allocated this to the runners or Families who are doing giveaways.

When I was a kid all the MC's used to make big of the Waterboys and remind the People of their importance.

I guess times is changing! LOL!

I have seen two things done at powwows in referendce to waterboys. At one I saw two young men working together to distribute water; one filling cups the other passing them out. At another powwow the waterboy had a cooler and cups on a cart and he rolled the cart filling cups as needed.

Very intersteating forum topic, thanks for sharing. I have since waterboys a few times. Once at a formal dance, Hethuluksa (is that the correct spelling, someone please correct me if I am worng thanks,) and the other one at a traditional powwow.

I just put up a thread about women dancing in men's cloths.

Has anybody ever seen a water girl?

I still see it done and yes I have seen gals helping with the job as well. I guess I go to old fashion dances. Around here they carry one of those big orange cooler jugs around and a stack or 2 of paper/foam cups.

I remember years ago getting a nice enamelware cup in an appliqued bag during a giveaway. It was to carry to the arena so I had my own cup to drink from while dancing. I still carry that in my dance bag and use it when I get the chance to dance around here.

Yes, gerrms are an issue and traditons change but they don't have to die out. The cooler and cups instead of a bucket and dipper is a good example of change without lose. Question would be ... is it the committee's or the AD's job to remember this position?

bum,

Is it that same nice enamelware cup you used to relieve that cute little monkey when he took his breaks, from the organ grinder?

I sure am. I'll give you that.

You can get 101 different illnesses from the shared water bucket, (which no one seems to do anyway anymore), but most assuredly not HIV.....

Or any Sexually Transmitted Disease for that matter. Spinal meningitis, sure, mono, yeah, but the clap????? Really? C'mon, man!

Here are some facts about HIV from the U.S. NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH website:

You cannot get HIV from using a public telephone, drinking fountain, restroom, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, or hot tub.

You cannot get HIV from sharing a drink.

I've been in ceremony where we have shared a jug of water from Home, but that is the only occassion that I've seen this anymore.

This weekend The Quapaw Tribes Powwow Committee saw to it that they had waterboys, though these young men were not boys any more. A great BIG A-ho for your help. these young men earned their lifesavers award. This was a hot weekend in the day and a little cooler at night.

Thank you to the Quapaw Tribal Powwow Committee headed up by Sonny Glass.

Only thing about having a waterboy is that you need a CO-MC so the MC can take bathroom breaks!!! That stuff goes right thru ya!!!

Like a Lumbee Powwow the past 2 years, me and Rob D taking shifts on what I called "the trail of tears", AKA the 200 yard walk from the stage to the bathroom!!!
