There are 3 stages to roundbustle in its story.

I really think you need to ask a roundbustle dancer how it is you just can't say that's how it is there are three stages when you learn about roundbustle the first stage is when you get your first roundbustle it is givine by a elder round bustle thats how you get in the first stage is with hawkfeathers for the first stage then you move on up to phesantfeathers then when the elder's think tour ready you move up you get eaglefeathers roundbustle from an elder .It's all based on years of wisdom from the first stage to the second to the thitd stage is all about age from kid to teen to become a man that is how I learnd A roundbustle way there are a lot of dance moves styles that nobody knows but I do. I want to show everyone the last of the roundbustle style
.everybody just know chicken from what everybody else says you have to get out on the floor and see for your self. as for a roundbustle dancer like me I truly dance the old style that was told to me by all my elders this is the way you was supose to dance were trying to dance like a sage grouse are prairie chicken to imitate that style to become that bird there is a lot to learn .so hope to see you out there. this is just a taste of the ROUNDBUSTLE STYLE .if you want to learn more you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Should the Chicken Dance and the Round Bustle Dance be two separate dance categories?

Whatch'a think?[/QUOTE]

As it is said before, there are number of versions of roundbustle as there are a number of oral stories that convey the same story. None should be discredited if valid enough... I say that reservingly as I can not claim to know everything... I have heard many people speak about the round bustle style... and most would agree... that it was truely a beautyful dance... the songs would be anything from marathon bullets to slow and graceful... to heal and toe... dancers would have to dance anything that was dished out to them. As I heard the secret is to flow and look graceful on top as your legs are moving in time with the drum... much like birds that we imitate... Judges made their decisions on a number of things... style, movement, keeping time, outfits, and of course the bells... It seems that this topic sticks out in conversations too.. some remember that dancers would have bells strung up to 3 or more rows. this made it more complex in dancing as the dancer had to be in top shape to continue... as JMeninick would say we would dance until it was over, what ever the song was... and if we won it was more for the glory... as the pay was not as much as today.
Times are changing but its up to this generation to keep a tab on whats what... in indian country....
thats all...

That is true. The things I learnd are from the mennick family and the walsey family and the miller and the jims and the georges and from many elders as for they are all my family on the YAKAMA rez there are many styles of roundbustle and I really like to dance this style as I'am sorry to say I don't know everthing.and nobody does it is the meaning of how you see it and if I said something wrong are bad I'am sorry for anything I said. this is just what I learnd they showed me how to dance in the right mind to dance for the elders and the ones be for me out of respect of the style to carry it on to show the people to honor ourselfes to make our mind body as one to be proud of who we are not to be show offs like we no everything just to be proud to be INDIAN PEOPLE in this world we live we should pray for ourselves and others in this world.

I think chicken dance and round bustle should have there own categories so that both of the styles have a moment to shine in there own way so everyone can be equl so nobody gets left out cause we travel to meet other dancers to show our best of styles as a ROUND BUSTLE dancer like myself.

I agree with Mr. Paul... as he is a good champian dancer himself... and he has deep roots so he knows where he speaks from... as some of those he talks about were great dancers too... a comment earlier in this post refered to thier not being a lot of dancers out there... I tell ya... host a round bustle categorie or special... and watch them step out... you will be amazed...

I can only speak as a singer on this subject. I was taught what I was taught. As a Hunkapa-Lakota and an Ojibwe person I was taught to sing Prairie Chicken songs that were shared with us by the Blackfeet and Chippewa-Cree folks, and as a person who lives among Yakama's and teaches a group of Yakama kids to sing powwow style, and who continually gets coached by Yakama's about the way things are done out here (not too "different", but distinct) I have also been taught Round Bustle songs. Prairie Chicken songs .. Round Bustle songs ... I humbly submit the two are not the same.

But it's true, a lot of people think they are the same and tend to lump them together for convenience (oh not another category to take up time blah blah blah) but then again how often do we see Fancy, Grass and everything-else-is-Traditional.

I went to the Couer D'Alene Casino Powwow in March 2006 and there was a Chicken Dance Special sponsored by Mr. Cliff SiJohn. After the special he announced the formation/revitalization of a Plateau Prairie Chicken Dance society. I don't know what that all entails but if one were to pass through the Worley area, they could probably present him with a gift and a warm handshake and ask for a few more details.
