Pheasant feathers

Why do many chicken dancers prefer to wear long pheasant tail feathers in their roaches? Pheasant feathers were transplanted to the American plains from China.

Are there any rules to how many one can wear or how the plumage is arranged on each feather?

In some areas Chicken Dancers wear pheasant feathers because they haven't received the right to wear eagle feathers. Wearing eagle feathers was only allowed for men of high stature and chicken dancing was a society of men not decorated yet.

Prairie Chickens are a vain creature as well as many of the dancers. They want to look good so they like to use the long pheasant feathers to draw attention. There was some aztec dancers traveling around Canada last summer and every where they went the sold the super long pheasant feathers and they sold like crazy. lol

I believe they started using pheasant feathers since the are readily available every where. Its like most dancers you see today, they have all kinds of feathers, hornbills, parrots, mackaws, bustards, cranes and hawks. If a feather looks pretty its going to get used.

Typically chicken dancers use only 2 pheasant feathers on their roach, this is to signify the feathers the 2 spike feathers on on a prairie chicken. With the idea of trying to draw attention to themselves, i've seen dancers use as many 8 pheasant feathers. The fluffs or bouncers are used for just that to make the feathers bounce and move with the dancers. The fluffs are usually just wrapped on with string and you will use alot of fluffs to get the full look. I like to dab some glue on the string after tying to help hold them in place.
