Cleveland Indians/Chief Wahoo Alternatives

Hello to all! My name is Natalia and I am a graphic designer living in Cleveland, OH. I am a first generation Croatian American, and have always had a deep respect for Native Americans and their history.

Being a Clevelander, I am happy that "Chief Wahoo" is finally in the process of being cut from the Indians' jersey. I realize that the name "Indians" alone raises sensitivity and many are opposed to the organization in general.

I'm considering a personal project of commissioning native graphic designers to re-brand the Cleveland Indians. I'd love to learn your thoughts on how Cleveland baseball could do a better job of honoring Native American heritage.

Do you feel that a visual representation of a real chief, illustrated in a more realistic/non-caricature style would be appropriate in replacing "Chief Wahoo"? Do you think an alternative name like "Cleveland Natives" or "Cleveland Iroquois" (historically relevant to Cleveland) would be appropriate?

Here is a theory on the history of the name "Cleveland Indians": The name "Indians" originated from a request by club owner Charles Somers to baseball writers to choose a new name to replace "Naps".

An oft-repeated legend is that the name "Indians" was chosen because it was one of the nicknames previously applied during the time when Louis Sockalexis, a Native American member of the Penobscot Tribe of Maine, played in Cleveland.

What about Cleveland Indians, with a Louis Sockalexis illustustration in place of a mascot?

All comments are welcome and appreciated. Thank you!
