Crow fair vibe

So I was looking for powwows and came across this site. I have only been to a handful of small powwows that were held at community centers and such. When I was a kid, I had this book about powwows, and all the pics were from Crow Fair,.,.,since then I have wanted to go to it soooo bad!Im gonna be in ohio this august so there goes this years chance so Im hoping to travel (epic journey style) via train/hitching for next year. Here is my main question....I have no Native heritage in me whatsoever,,.,,Is everyone cool with the non indian spectators who go? I feel like its a stupid question, but then again, I dont have any Indian friends I can ask so I shall ask here :)

I'm not NDN, I'm White as they come. But I went to Crow Fair a couple/three years ago. There were people there from all over, even from as far away as Japan! I spent three days at the powwow and another few days driving around the Crow Reservation and some of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. I never felt like I was unwelcome or that people resented my being there. Everyone I came in contact with were very kind, gracious and welcoming. Be respectful, don't act the fool, and have fun!

Wow, was it that long ago, RDNKJ? It seems like only last year that I told you to go have a Purple Cow at the Purple Cow??

I'm glad you had a good time.

Crow Fair is great - the powwow, the parade, the rodeo, the tipis.

Yeah, I know! Scary how time flies. Thanks, Crow Fair was a lot of fun. Omg, yeah, the tipis! All the tipis! I'd never seen so many tipis in one place before. As they say it's the "Tipi Capital of the World!"

I put almost exactly 1000 miles on my rent-a-car that week I was there! There ain't nothin' "close by" in Montana!

gothik_angellik, go out there and be yourself. Take some photos and post them. I always like to see what others find interesting, especially people new to powwows.

Whatever you do, do NOT dance in the intertribals like the funked up hippies I saw last weekend at the MSU powwow in Bozeman. O.M.G. They were swinging their legs and arms around like string puppets and didn't even try to dance correctly. Many people in the audience were pointing and making fun of them and rightfully so. I could hardly look. Seriously.

I couldn't make the Billings powwow this weekend but I'm up around Billings atleast once a month and want to push on pass that and make the Crow powwow this year....its always in July though, isn't it? I loathe hot weather.

Those "funked up hippies" at MSU powwow in Bozeman were something else. The only thing that I've seen since that topped them was a woman in Post Falls. I took her picture and told her I was going to post it on my facebook....she never would stop acting up!

gothik,

Hmmm? I heard a story about another guy who didn't have no Native heritage in him whatsoever and visited this area. I think his last name was Custer?

Before you go, please talk with Jackie Yellowtail. She is the director of tourism for the Crow Nation and can answer all your questions. You can contact Jackie through Facebook.

Talking with Legendary Pow Wow MC Dale Old Horn
By Maria Scandale April 27, 2011

.....we asked Dale Old Horn, Crow Tribal Historic Preservation Officer—for his point of view on what it’s like to MC major pow wow events. One such event, the 93rd annual Crow Fair celebration and pow wow this year, on Aug. 18-28, is one of the major pow wow events of the year.

“A celebration of our way of life,” says Old Horn, describing the massive and inspiring Crow Fair, an annual event that takes place at his home, Crow Agency in Montana.

....Over 100 years ago, Crow Indian leaders organized a gathering of the six Crow Reservation Districts to perform the arts and display the culture, and they invited other tribes. Bringing together the native people of the Great Plains was no easy task during the early days, the Crow Fair web site points out

Q: Can you give us some background on the Crow Fair?

“Crow Fair was established in 1904 by Crow Agency BIA Supt. Reynolds to showcase the completion of the assimilation of the Crow Indians by showing the world that they have been transformed into farmers-a U.S. government policy stemming from the General Allotment Act of 1887.

When the world press arrived to witness this event, the Crow Indians astutely surmised that the BIA could not stop Crows from practicing some of the native culture. They knew that the world would not approve of the subjugation measures that the U.S. government had employed. So they brought out the Big Drum and they sang and danced.

The Indian Agent later brought in parading and the Crows once again took advantage by wearing native regalia, which had been previously outlawed by the U.S. government. Before this the Crows had to hide from the U.S. government to practice their native culture. And so today we honor our ancestors by continuing the tradition of that ‘giant family reunion under the Big Sky.

There is spirituality involved when I’m announcing, but that is private information that is within my Announcing Right,” he said, referring to the ritual that must be passed through in order to hold the responsibility of announcer for the people.

Q: Could you please explain more about the Crow Fair being “a celebration of our way of life?”

“The celebration of our way of life is predicated on the very visible expression of our native beliefs in our ceremonies and rituals that are prevalent at Crow Fair. The people appreciate powwow because it contains the expression of native beliefs in spirituality. Perpetuation of native culture by practice is paramount.”

Crow Fair

When you go, stop at the Custer Battlefield Trading Post on the left as you start up the hill. Good food, and the owners, Putt and Jill, are great. They can give you some good tips on where to go and what to see.
