Hopi snake dance

Hello :)
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right group but I wanted to know if you know anything about the Hopi snake dance? I've read an article covering this topic (I'll link it here later) and found it very fascinating. If anyone has any good videos besides those in the article, I'd appreciate that :)

[sarcasm font]I want tell you all about a nice study I plan on Transubstantiation. Since I hold to the Westminster Confession of Faith, I don't believe in it and feel it's time to subject that "superstition" to scientific scrutiny. I hope to prove that there is no change in the substance, even if a Cardinal performs the mass. It's all outmoded Aristotelianism double-talk. [/sarcasm font]

Was I just pretty disrespectful? Dang straight.

Respect. This is an important Native behavior. Even if you don't believe, show respect to those that do. This is counter to the dominant culture, which seems to require that anyone -- outside a handful of protected groups -- who holds a belief you disagree with must be mocked and crushed.

"6th. The usual practices of so-called "medicine-men" shall be considered "Indian offenses" cognizable by the Court of Indian Offenses, and whenever it shall be proven to the satisfaction of the court that the influence or practice of a so-called "medicine-man" operates as a hindrance to the civilization of a tribe, or that said "medicine-man" resorts to any artifice or device to keep the Indians under his influence, or shall adopt any means to prevent the attendance of children at the agency schools, or shall use any of the arts of a conjurer to prevent the Indians from abandoning their heathenish rites and customs, he shall be adjudged guilty of an Indian offense, and upon conviction of any one or more of these specified practices, or, any other, in the opinion of the court, of an equally anti-progressive nature, shall be confined in the agency prison for a term not less than ten days, or until such time as he shall produce evidence satisfactory to the court, and approved by the agent, that he will forever abandon all practices styled Indian offenses under this rule."

-- Code of Indian Offenses, 1883

Ches, are you talking about the J. Walter Fewkes work? Can't you see the power dynamic operating in a lot of that turn of the century anthropology? His work was done around the time (1895) that the Army sent 19 parents and religious men from Oraibi to Alcatraz for refusing to play along the program of cultural genocide. They knew the whip of the government. Did they let anthropologists in voluntarily? Maybe some folks thought if they white man understood he'd leave their culture alone. Maybe some were afraid. Maybe some were tricked and their hospitality abused.

Ches, these ceremonies, these stories, these languages are things the ancestors -- ancestors you claim as your people too -- fought for. They are the intellectual and spiritual property of their tribes. Often they are fragments. But they're not communal property with all mankind. The colonizer should not be allowed to be the gatekeepers of these traditions.

These academic works exist. They need to be placed in the context. They need to be understood as seeing through the glass darkly. The wishes of the community regarding the use these materials needs to be respected.

The Hopis have said time and time again leave this alone. You don't understand it; your scholarship misrepresents it. This is ours. We choose not to share it. This is private.
