I'd rather go begging in the streets than going to any wellfare Food places run by churches or similar. Got my talents and I like them but lack of Talent for making Money and I don't Need much Money but at least a bit more, so I can go out and meet People who can afford to go places on a regular Basis. I presume those german Indian hobbyists are not poor. They copy culture and do things they think that's how it's to be done. I have been with real NDN's when I was living with them in the States and some are poor concerning Money, some are not but the NDN culture is rich and should be preserved - within NDN communities - german hobbyists are some Kind of weird human genre. They like feathers, animals and want to express their affinity to nature in a strange way by playing NDN. I do not approve of that, would not like to go there. Germans aren't NDN's!!! So perhaps they should invent a new sense for a new german nature based rites, whatever it's called, using feathers, regalias, whatever - to feed their desire and longing for some Kind of nature based community. But however - their likings for plain Indians and strangely enough only for those - is nothing else but a role model for - how to find a new cultural understanding in a community - if they would start out with a complete new way - celebrating nature - they probably declared crazy and since most Germans know that there are NDN's and some would like to know how they did it - life in the past - they would not feel threatened so much by every other german around them and get declared crazy. Just my thoughts. Don't know if they are right or wrong. |

I'm wondering, wondering...who wrote the book of love!
![]() +++++++++++++++ But in response to the original question in that now-closed thread, my 2 cents: Beginning around the time of the civil rights movement, when we started "celebrating our diversity," we (Whites) started feeling left out. We didn't feel like we had any ethnicity/diversity to celebrate. Because so many of our ancestors were from the British Isles, this eventually gave rise to the interest in all things Celtic. During roughly the same timeline, we entered into the whole hippy, peace and love, turn on - tune in - drop out period. This, influenced in no small part by Rousseau and the Romantic Movement lead to a over-idealization of untamed nature and “untamed man.” And, of course, Carlos Castaneda can't be ignored in this equation. Our search for the untamed man within spawned the New Age movement. Our interest in the Celts ended up being coopted by the New Agers and more specifically Wiccans. What was left? For Americans, it makes a certain sense that some would try to glom onto NDNs. They don’t know enough about their own ethnic cultures to celebrate their own tribal roots, and y’all are the “tribe next door.” It is often an admiration based on racism. Usually unintended racism, but racism nonetheless. European wannabes make less sense to me. The influences are much the same, but I’m assuming that e.g., Germans living and growing up in Germany know more about their ethnic and pre-Christian history than an American of German descent does. So, I’m mystified that Europeans in search of their “more authentic” selves don’t look to their own traditions rather than looking across an ocean and ½ a continent to a culture that not only isn’t their own, but also has nothing to do with their European reality, modern or historical/tribal. @Spiritflight, is there much of a movement in Germany to emulate the old Germanic tribes? Is there much interest in the worship of Wotan, Tiw, Donar, etc.? As for wolves and NDNs… Part of it is tied up in the above. Wolves loom very large in European lore, and are a symbol of the untamed. Were there many (or any?) paintings of wolves during the blue deer period of contemporary NDN art? But then, for all I know, it’s all because of an old advertising campaign for Calumet Baking Powder. ![]() |

Very funny yea - not the floods - it happens in the south of Germany - I live in the North. The weather is unusual this year. If my place would get sweeped off - I had a reason to pack my backpack and leave the Country since I can't afford insurance like most of them in the south who get their houses washed away. Germany is financially speaking rich but not for the poor like me. The poor are getting drained. I has become worse since the wall to eastern Germany were broken down and before that our western gov. made sure, even the poor still could have a normal kinda good life.

The weather has been way too cold this year, unsually cold, so next week they say, it's getting warmer. Germans do like Camping with tents, most who can afford it use Vans. Germans do not camp in ndn Tipis exect those wannabe Indians. Caming is fun - it's nice, I like to camp too using my tent, but alone it's just boring.

Now, personally, I like Germany a lot. I tried for many years to immerse myself in German culture, but failed miserably. I hate beer and I simply cannot polka.

I'd be offended, but given my own love for Oktoberfest, I'd be a total hypocrite.

There are the former hippie freaks that are open to a lot of different thinking pattern and new people but stuck in the 70ies concerning music and the inevidable weed drug which I greatly dislike. There are well off or having a good life germans, open to everybody but the poor. Ya also can find them hang out with those who like beer and fat pork foods. But they stick together in their community class. There are those peace loving germans who do stuff for the invironment but do not let anyone join who thinks differently. Then there are those who like ALL forein people living in Germany and they jump on you if you'd ever get in an arguement with any foreign looking person and defend this person like crazy. Then there are those who hate all foreigners living in Germany but aren't open to anything else that's new either. Those are more the nazi types and the love beer and beer gardens. Basically their life consists of beer and hate and those who are well educated mingle with the like. Then there are those who drop out of society because they can't adjust to all that confusion and prefer not belonging to any kind of group - like me, but ya never get to meet any of those as either they seem to hide or it's just me. There are the happy faced ones who to me just putting on a show to win you over. And yes, if you meet germans that bend head over heels for you as a foreign person, you may as well that it's only that what they do and don't care about fellow germans. Whatever, just words of how I view these german people. I am sick of this german show stage and I just stick to myself. Conclusion, Germany has no culture. Just a lot of confused people who don't know. One thing you may find unity with a lot of germans from all classes is soccer games. That's it. Soccer is their culture. It seems germans lost connections to everything b4 WW2. So, I do not know if what I say is right, but to me it's what I observed. |
