Idle No More

I applaud the united efforts by native nations across North America. The strength of one strand is limited, the strength of many cannot be broken. I fear that it may be somewhat like a flash flood however...washing across the country, getting swept up..only to have the skies clear and to slowly soak away. This Can NOT happen otherwise all of the efforts and steps taken will be for not. This leads me to my next fear...maybe not so popular... although I applaud what Chief Spence is doing..I see another side to the coin..if Harper does nothing, he in effect will kill a leader..I question if he should be given that opportunity. While I respect her willingness to lay her life down for the people..her leadership is needed for a MUCH longer time than what she may be granted if she keeps up her fasting. I don't know the answer, but I do know you have to be living to fight. IMHO ..

CN rail lawyers in Sarnia court to stop ‘Idle-No-More’ blockaders

Tim Alamenciak
Staff Reporter

Lawyers for CN railway are bringing two motions before a Sarnia court today in an effort to push back against native protesters blockading a busy spur line in the industrial district of the city.

The first motion is against Ron Plain, spokesperson for the blockaders, asking the judge to find him in contempt of court. The second is a request for the Sarnia chief of police, Phil Nelson, to attend court and explain what steps have been taken to enforce the injunction granted to CN.

The blockade went up Dec. 21 and has prevented trains from accessing some facilities along the line. Propane company Pembina Pipelines has a facility behind the line, but has shifted distribution to another location to make up for the blockage.

“This is supposed to be a scare tactic,” said Plain, who said he would appear in court.

Protesters are demanding that Prime Minister Stephen Harper honour a request by Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence for a meeting with native leaders. Spence has been on hunger strike since Dec. 11.

A nationwide movement by aboriginals, known as Idle No More, has peppered the country with protests ranging from flashmobs to blockades calling for greater consultation on changes to land management on reserves and the Indian Act.

The rail company has faced criticism from Sarnia’s mayor who is calling for a peaceful solution to the blockade that would happen outside of courts and police.

The hearing was scheduled for 11 a.m.

Idle No More spreads beyond border as aboriginal activists ramp up pressure

By Benjamin Shingler, The Canadian Press January 1, 2013

MONTREAL - The aboriginal movement known as Idle No More continued to gain strength beyond Canada's borders on Tuesday as activists embarked on a public relations blitz in the United States.

Pamela Palmater, one of the leaders of the movement, travelled to Washington, D.C. to give interviews to the U.S. press. She said the goal of the media campaign was to raise awareness internationally and force Prime Minister Stephen Harper to act.

"The idea is to put pressure on the Canadian government to pay attention and come to the table," Palmater said by phone.

"I was invited to come down and do some media about Idle No More, basically answer questions about why it's spreading into the United States."

In addition to recent events held across Canada, rallies have already been staged as far off as Texas, Hawaii and New Zealand with plans for more in the coming days.

Palmater said Chief Theresa Spence's hunger strike, now in its fourth week, is part of a much larger protest movement.

The initial spark was the federal government's omnibus budget legislation but it has now become about broader issues like inequality and treaty rights, she said.

Palmater noted an evolution in the form protests have taken over the past few weeks, toward increased civil disobedience.

"We did letter writing and phone calls and trying to talk to MPs and, you know, we took that route and it didn't work," she said.

"Then we had to move up to peaceful marches and rallies, and that didn't work. So now we're doing all these flash mob round dances, which are more about working hand in hand with Canadians and also keeping the focus on the media. But now you see blockades."

There have been several disruptions at rail lines over the past week, including one on the main line between Montreal and Toronto on Sunday evening which delayed Via Rail passengers. Protesters have also blocked a CN line in Sarnia, Ont.

There was even a call to set up blockades at Canada-U.S. borders on Saturday, though that move hasn't been endorsed by organizers.

It wasn't clear whether local activists would follow through.

A statement released last week on the Idle No More website urged peaceful forms of protest.

"Idle No More feels that any acts that are not in line with peace and solidarity only detract attention from our ultimate mission," the statement said.

Palmater echoed that sentiment on Tuesday.

"We're trying our best to avoid things that would inconvenience Canadians," she said.

Meanwhile, Spence's hunger strike continued to gain support from across the country. A group of activists travelled from the Maritimes to bring supplies to her protest site, located on an island in the Ottawa River across from Parliament Hill.

Dozens of demonstrators took to the streets of downtown Toronto on Tuesday afternoon in support of Idle No More and stopped traffic at one of the city's busiest intersections.

Actor Tantoo Cardnial was part of the Toronto rally and said she got into acting to tell the world the stories of Canada's aboriginal peoples.

"The blueprint of who we are as a civilization — that was attacked by the church, by the government, by corporations," Cardinal said.

Spence is in support of the treaty rights and the "Canadian people have to understand there are two signers in the treaties," she said.

"Those treaties were signed in a sacred way — they were signed through ceremony, through prayer ... and it's a sacred agreement."

Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan has offered to meet with her but Spence has turned that proposal down.

The federal government says it has made an effort to consult with aboriginal leaders and work on pressing issues on reserves like education, clean drinking water and housing.

It points to a meeting held last January with First Nations leaders as proof it is serious about improving their relationship.

Idle No More movement grows as situation “becoming more volatile”

By Jordan Press, Postmedia News January 2, 2013 12:16 PM

OTTAWA—A First Nations chief on a hunger strike is urging supporters of the Idle No More movement and aboriginal chiefs to come together in a united front at a time when relations with the Harper government are becoming more “volatile” and strained with each passing day.

Chief Theresa Spence made the plea Wednesday as the movement appears ready to ramp up in the coming days.

It also came days after the founders of Idle No More attempted to distance the grassroots movement from native chiefs.

Rail blockades have already taken place in Quebec and Ontario as demonstrations take place around the world, and Spence’s spokespeople said Wednesday in a written statement that the situation “is becoming more volatile.” The statement added that chiefs who met in Ottawa last week plan to launch “countrywide economic disturbances” if Prime Minister Stephen Harper doesn’t meet with Spence.

On social media, activists were calling for blockades of border crossings on Saturday “to show the government that we are willing to escalate this to a point where we shut down the country.”

The movement, which started as a series of teach-ins on a small Saskatchewan reserve, has grown into a national movement that is now receiving international attention.

Spence has become a focal point for Idle No More, subsiding on nothing more than fish broth and water since Dec. 11. She has said she’ll starve herself to death if Harper doesn’t meet with her, but has also suggested that a meeting between the government and native chiefs to discuss treaty concerns would suffice.

Harper has so far not said if he will meet with Spence. Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan has offered to meet with Spence, but she has declined his offers.

On New Year’s Day, a close aide to Spence sent a letter to the founders of Idle No More which quotes Spence as saying that chiefs “must humble themselves and be one with the brave grassroots citizens of our nations.

“(Spence’s) message is that the chiefs must and will redeem themselves despite an imperfect past; the time has come for the leaders of our nations to become one and the same as the people,” reads the letter from Angela Bercier.

“The chiefs have made mistakes in the past, but don’t shame them for these. They are, after all, our people. The chiefs are ready now to humble themselves for the people.”

The founders of Idle No More were expected to respond to the letter Wednesday.

two days before Christmas we had some action at miller mall in town
Quote:
About a dozen American Indian drummers and several dozen supporters gathered inside Miller Hill Mall on Saturday afternoon to stage a “flash” drum circle and round dance aimed to show solidarity with protests taking place in Canada.

Word of the impromptu gathering, which started at about 2 p.m. and lasted about 25 minutes, was spread through social media over about three days, organizers said.

“We’re just doing our part, trying to get noticed,” said Landon Manitowabi of Duluth. “We’re all native; (our) brothers in Canada need our help.”

But the event was held in defiance of mall officials, who said they reached out to organizers beforehand and informed them that such an event on mall property, without the required insurance and other documentation, would violate mall policy.

Mall security guards and Duluth police officers, who work there on overtime paid for by the mall during the holiday season, were on hand during the gathering until it dispersed. There were no arrests, police said.

The drum circle formed in the court north of Younkers, and the drums and the calls of participants echoed through the mall. Organizers said the event was tied to what’s being called the “Idle No More” campaign that has included large protests by First Nations across Canada against the Canadian government’s policies toward native communities.

The Canadian Press reported that Theresa Spence, the chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation in far northern Ontario, is on a hunger strike in Ottawa, demanding to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and trying to start a national conversation about poverty in native communities.

Protesters closed down part of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday. “Flash” events similar to the one at Miller Hill Mall have taken place at Canadian shopping centers.

While the Canadian protests may seem far away, those who gathered Saturday in Duluth said the concerns transcend international borders.

“It’s a show of support; we believe in no boundaries,” said drummer Les Gibbs of Duluth.

Manitowabi and fellow participant Raven Sohm of Duluth said Miller Hill Mall was chosen as a central, high-visibility gathering point for people from as far as Grand Portage, Bemidji and Ashland who traveled to Duluth to take part.

A similar gathering was planned for later in the day at Bentleyville, Sohm said.

While the right for people to gather and speak at Bentleyville — an event held in a city park — has been upheld in recent court rulings, Miller Hill Mall is private property. Participants in Saturday’s event cited other gatherings they’ve seen at the mall, such as dance and choir performances, as reasons why they felt they should be allowed to gather, too.

But Machelle Kendrick, the mall’s director of marketing and business development, said those past events all followed procedures the facility has set in place for groups who want to hold events at the mall, such as filing a certificate of insurance and other required paperwork.

“They had permission to be in the mall,” she said.

The organizers of Saturday’s drum circle did not follow those procedures, Kendrick said. She also said that while mall officials like to host community events, the mall does not allow protests, or events with political and religious slants.

“We’re like Switzerland. We’re very neutral, and we have to be that way to make sure we represent all of the Northland,” she said.

Kendrick said officials were “discouraged” that the group showed up anyway after being informed of mall policy. But she said the mall had a security plan in place, focused on ensuring mall visitors’ safety and that business at the mall’s stores was not interrupted. Any large gathering poses security concerns, she said.

After the drumming ended, Kendrick said, mall officials talked to some of the participants.

“We thanked them for gathering peacefully, and asked them to leave peacefully,” she said.

Drummers placed their instruments back into shopping bags, bottles of water were passed around and camera phones that had been held aloft were tucked back into pockets as the crowd dispersed without incident.
Here is the info.

THE COMMENTS SECTION FOLLOWING THIS ARTICLE SHOWS THAT CANADA IS DIVIDED

OTTAWA - Rotating blockades will hit various railways, highways and border crossings later this month as the Idle No More gears up for long-term fighting.

Unconfirmed media reports mark Jan. 16 as the launch date for "indefinite economic disruptions".

Several blockades have already taken place in Sarnia, ON, as well as along the busy Toronto-Montreal corridor. Another major blockade is planned at the Peace Arch border crossing in Surrey, BC Saturday.

Blockades are not a new tactic for First Nations, whose past actions have caused million-dollar losses.

Spokespeople for CN, CP and Via railways declined to "speculate" on the impact of the blockades, but with both transcontinental lines running through Native land, they will almost certainly be affected.

The Idle No More movement has no central organization; actions are planned by individual bands. The movement began as solidarity for Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence - who has been on a hunger strike since Dec. 11 in the hopes of forcing Prime Minister Stephen Harper to meet with her - but has expanded beyond its original mandate.

Jan O'Driscoll, spokesman for Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan, reiterated the government's position that working together should be the goal.

Senator Patrick Brazeau said many of First Nations' grievances have merit, but added that many of those issues could be dealt with within those communities.

"I get complaints that these people can't get in touch with their chiefs, that there's no process in place. At the federal level, there is a process in place but we see that it isn't always respected."

I wanted to note that a lot of the borders will have protesting happening tomorrow. I will be attending a peaceful rally at the Peace bridge which connects Buffalo, NY to Fort Erie, ON. I hope to get some pictures and videos to possible share.

Native protest closes Cornwall bridge, border crossing

By TERESA SMITH, The Ottawa Citizen January 5, 2013 1:02 PM

OTTAWA —

Cornwall police closed the U.S. border crossing Saturday morning in response to a planned protest by members of the Idle No More movement.

“We knew something was going to take place in the last day or two,” said Sgt. Marc Bissonnette of the Cornwall police.

He said they closed the bridge around 10:30 a.m. “for the safety of the public and the safety of the protesters,” but could not say when it would reopen.

Protesters from the Akwesasne reserve, which spans the border and includes both American and Canadian citizens, started on the U.S. side, and walked across the bridge to the Canadian side.

It is part of the Idle No More movement, which has seen increasing protests, blockades, peaceful round-dances and rallies over the past month.

Some supporters are demanding the government repeal parts of Bill C-45, the omnibus budget bill, which they say contravene their treaty rights.

Protesters with drums and flags were singing as they walked north across the bridge at 11:30 a.m.

Jorge Barrera from The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network reported that the Canada Border Services Agency was attempting to “process” the hundreds of protesters before entering Canada. He tweeted that border guards wanted to “break them up into small groups,” but protesters marched through the stop.

Bissonnette had no word as to when the crossing would open again to cars: “It depends on how long it takes (the protesters) to cross the bridge and what they decide to do.”

The Douglas crossing, also known as the Peace Arch Bridge connecting Vancouver with the United States, was expected to be shut down by protesters later Saturday.
