Hundreds of aboriginal women and their supporters gathered at the Peace Arch border crossing this afternoon to rally for the growing Idle No More movement.

The solemn sound of a conch boomed amid a cacophony of clapping, yelling and chanting demonstrators as they gathered at the Peace Arch provincial park.

Thick sage smoke filled the air as indigenous people from many different nations in B.C. and the U.S, including Coast Salish, Cree, Inuit and Mohawk, banged drums and sang songs.

Small children sat perched on parents shoulders, taking in the festival-like atmosphere, watching elders dressed in traditional clothing give speeches and prayers with a common theme: To save mother Earth. Many of the kids held signs calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to protect their future. "Please protect mother Earth," read one sign, while another said, "I am fighting for my future. "

Lorelei Williams, 32, from the Skatin Nation and her daughter Saiyaka, 7, held a sign that said: "When sleeping women wake mountains move." Williams said she wanted her daughter to learn a sense of empowerment and strength.

"It's very important for her to see us sticking up for our culture. I want her to see it with her own eyes," she said. Idle No More is a grass roots movement that has been growing across the country in a bid to get the prime minister to meet with First Nations to talk about treaty rights. Many groups are pledging to block bridges across the US and Canada border. Demonstrations are being held despite Harper announcing he would meet with a delegation of First Nations Chiefs, including Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence who has been on a hunger strike for 26 days.

Today I marched with about 1,000 other people across the Seaway International Bridge from the U.S. to Canada as a part of the Idle No More movement in order to block traffic between the two countries. Click here to find out more about Idle No More.

Listuguj blockade now stopping passenger trains

NATIONAL NEWS | 09. JAN, 2013 BY APTN NATIONAL NEWS

By Tom Fennario
APTN National News

Listuguj – Dakota Barnaby has been chopping a lot of wood lately.

It’s cold so he has no choice if he and his friend want to stay warm guarding a rail blockade that started almost two weeks ago in the Listuguj territory of the eastern region of Quebec.

When asked what’s the hardest part of keeping up a blockade he answers quickly.

“Dealing with the cold,” said Barnaby, adding the first two nights they didn’t have shelter when they began Dec. 27.

A teepee has since been set up a stone’s throw from the rails where people can warm up.

Inside there are usually at least a half dozen people, including elders and youth.

They’re steadfast in their belief to hold the blockade despite pressure to bring it down.

In the beginning, rules were put in place in order to maintain support for the their cause.

“We decided not to block passenger trains because you know our fight is not with the people of Canada, the citizens of this country, our fight is with the government,” said Alexander Morrison, who has become the spokesman for the blockade.

But that changed Monday.

After Quebec provincial negotiators tried to intervene the group started blocking all trains from passing through their territory.

Now it seems only a matter of time before the courts get involved.

“When it comes to the question of us breaking the laws, we don’t look at it like that,” said Morrison. “We look at it as, you know, we’re using what we have to do in our territory. We’re not going in someone else’s territory to do this. Maybe they shouldn’t have ran the tracks in our backyard and then maybe we wouldn’t have to block them.”

The protestors are waiting to see if their support will weaken but they feel the Conservative government’s omnibus bill, Bill C-45, that is now law, threatens not only the health of the rivers they fish but the unemployment benefits that those in the fishing industry count on in the off season.

It’s worth fighting for, they say, so they continue.

Night has fallen back at the blockade and with the it the temperature, yet the blockade bustles.

The teepee is standing room only.

Idle No More?

It seems to me that some of these Idle No More are just getting jacked, it's now has become a round dance social, with a little dash of awareness talk but mostly round dance. It saddens me a bit that the 1st Voice of Idle No More is simply changing to a round dance social event. I always wondered; why not flash mob to a Reserve and help some of those unfortunate families. Bring some carpentry tools, and with the amount of people attending these flash mobs, things can get done, even if its one house at a time. I know Idle No More is not really about this but it can help make a difference to a family who is struggling instead of just round dancing. I'm pretty sure there is a family in need and a round dance far from the reserve will not really help, I'm it will raise awareness but something physical should be done to help these unfortunate families living in poor conditions on Reserves.

Chief Spence Ends Hunger Strike

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/stor...er-strike.html

Chief Theresa Spence to end hunger strike Thursday

Spence to wrap it up after NDPs, Liberals and chiefs sign her declaration

CBC News Posted: Jan 23, 2013 7:54 AM ET Last Updated: Jan 23, 2013 10:01 PM ET

Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence has decided to end her six-week-long hunger strike after members of the Assembly of First Nations and the Liberal and New Democrat caucuses agreed to back a list of commitments supporting aboriginal issues.

Representatives from the AFN, the NDP caucus and the Liberal caucus have all signed a declaration of specific commitments asked for by Spence. Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae, who was in Sarnia Wednesday, will also be signing the 13-point declaration.

Michčle Audette, president of the Canadian Native Women's Association, said Spence will hold a press conference Thursday morning in Ottawa at 11 a.m. ET, along with Raymond Robinson, an elder from Cross Lake Nation in Manitoba.

Robinson, who joined Spence in her liquids-only diet, will also announce an end to his protest.

"I have never been in such an awe-inspiring movement … with all the nations of different races coming together to try to achieve a common goal, and I cannot thank them enough for all the generosity, all the support," Robinson told CBC News Wednesday.

There will also be an "honouring ceremony" for Spence and her fellow fasters Thursday afternoon hosted by Nishnawbe Aski Nation, which Rae and the other representatives are expected to attend.

AFN chief Shawn Atleo expressed his personal appreciation for Spence’s contribution.

“Our shared goal is simple and clear: to guarantee that our children can achieve the brighter future that they deserve. This is what every chief across this country, every member of the Assembly of First Nations will continue to fight to achieve,” Atleo said in a statement.

Spence, who had been subsisting on fish broth and medicinal tea since Dec. 11, had been examining ways to return to her home and nurse herself back to health.

She had been engaged in her protest for six weeks, camped on an island in the Ottawa River not far from Parliament Hill, in an effort to convince the country's top leaders to take First Nations concerns seriously.

Theresa Spence ends her hunger protest

OTTAWA — Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence emerged from hospital Thursday to sign the First Nations declaration that ended her hunger protest after six long weeks — a period during which Stephen Harper barely uttered her name.

Indeed, for a crisis that just two weeks ago had the prime minister squarely at its centre, it seemed a weary and chaotic finale, one largely devoid of anti-Harper vitriol.

The Cree leader, who hadn’t had solid food since Dec. 11, spent most of the day recovering in hospital, only to show up unannounced at a celebration that brought First Nations chiefs from across the country.

A chanting, drumming crowd greeted her at a downtown Ottawa hotel, where she thanked family, friends and supporters for their backing during the six chilly weeks she spent on Victoria Island, just upstream from Parliament Hill.

She suggested she now intends to step back from the political struggle.

“There you go, chiefs, you take over and I’ll be part of the audience some times, so I’ll be watching you guys,” Spence said, calling for unity among First Nations leaders.

“It’s time to really stay together no matter what hardship that we go through, and no matter what the government intends to do to us to divide us. Always remember that we’re here together and we’re here for our people, especially the youth.”

Emissaries from federal opposition parties kept a low profile at the second ceremony, where Spence herself signed the declaration that had been so painstakingly crafted to bring her protest to a conclusion.

NDP critics Charlie Angus and Romeo Saganash had been on hand at the hotel, but scheduling challenges kept them from lingering long enough to witness Spence’s triumphant appearance.

The scene was a far cry from Jan. 11, when the street in front of Harper’s working office near Parliament Hill was filled with protesters beating drums, pounding on his door and threatening widespread disruption if he didn’t repeal changes to environmental legislation and improve conditions on reserves.

Two new analyzes appear to indicate the Canadian public remains confused by — and is steadily disengaging from — efforts by aboriginal activists and leaders to improve their relationship with the rest of Canada.

A telephone survey conducted by Harris-Decima for The Canadian Press suggests fewer than four in 10 Canadians are both familiar with and sympathetic to the goals and aims of the Idle No More cause.

And an analysis of the movement’s influence on social media platforms implies a waning influence: while some 17,000 people tweeted about Idle No More at the height of the protest Jan. 11, that number had dwindled to about 5,600 eight days later, says a new study by digital public affairs strategist Mark Blevis.

Nonetheless, there are signs it had some impact.

While Harper has avoided talking with or about Spence, he has engaged in the national conversation about how to improve the quality of life on reserves. In the Jan. 11 meetings with AFN chiefs, Harper agreed to appoint top people to lead discussions on modernizing treaties, speeding up land claims negotiations and improving education.

Plus, he agreed to move the date of that meeting — a gesture Spence’s supporters have interpreted as a tacit acknowledgment of her protest.

Like many protests, the movement has begun to take on different meanings to different people (while still under the overall umbrela of supporting native sovereignty, the environment, and the indigenous community). While I support the movement, I'm sure that half the people who are participating in the round dances don't even know what Bill C-45 even states or what events led to creating this movement.

Here in the U.S. Idle No More is merely an attraction for round dances and powwows, gone is the message behind Idle No More, the current drive is vain at best now. Much like the Occupy Wall Street movement. Well, this is my opinion on Idle No More now-a-days.

I agree, though I wish it weren't so.

I missed the last round dance that was apparently in the area so I wasn't able to see first hand what goes on. At each of these rallies, is there a speaker to explain what is going on and the purpose of the events? Or do most of the events appear as primarily the flash mob as the crux of the rally?

On one hand, I generally like round dances. They bring people together and let us all move as one. But on the other hand, the message of why we are dancing needs to be thoroughly explained and imbedded into each person's mind that witnesses the event. Otherwise, we'll just come off as a mass of sideshow natives who like to dance. The thought and purpose of INM is nice, so long as the message is gotten across to the public in its entirety.

For now, I will continue to spread the words and purpose of the group to raise awareness, but question if the rallies are truly working in the way that they were intended.
