Mila Hanska Ceyapelo - Long Knives are Crying

Though thie question might be asked at PowWow Singing, I think, this forum is more appropiate.

Joseph M. Marschall III. has written three "Western" Native Novels which appear to me a continuation of Lakota Tales ind Texts in todays world.

Winter of the Holy Iron
Hundred in the Hand
Long Knives are Crying

There is no question who are the good, the bad and the ugly.

I have read them with great joy and I think that they carry very much more than is be obvious to many readers.

On the page in front of the glossary of the third novel there is a text of a Lakota Song:

Mila Hanska Ceyapelo
Nantan iyayapi, Mila Hanska Ceaypelo
Nantan iyayapi, Nantan iyayapi!
Nantan iyayapi, Nantan iyayapi!
Nantan iyayapi, Nantan iyayapi!
Mila Hanska Ceapelo

The tranlation given is

The long knives are crying
They went on a charge, the long knives are crying
They went on a charge, they went on a charge!
They went on a charge, they went on a charge!
They went on a charge, they went on a charge!
The long knives are crying

I have searched for that song to hear in which way the song is sang but could not find him.

Joseph W. Marshal says that this version is performed by the Good Feather Singers, a Lakota drum group from Boulder Colorado.

Is there a possibility and chance to hear and see a drum group sing that song and give a hint if it is possible where to find it?

They are charging! (Now,) the (name of enemy) are crying. Is a very common line in Lakota war songs. I probably have recordings of 20-30 variations, most of them from World War II and are about Germans and Japanese crying.

This is another fairly popular song from the Battle of the Little Bighorn:

Porcupine Singers - Little Bighorn War Song

If this song is doesn't belong to a particular family or drum, you may find another group singing it. Maybe in one of the old Indian Records recordings. (I have most of their Lakota stuff on cassette tape, from back in my high school and college days. I don't have a tape player anymore. So, I can't listen to them and tell you.) It may also be in some of the old Canyon stuff -- William Horncloud's stuff maybe. There are 5 or 6 Little Bighorn songs, sung by Edgar Red Cloud, on one of the Smithsonian Folkways recordings. I think it is their collection of songs for veterans.

Oh wow, it just hit me. Memorial Day weekend without powwows.

A wapaha song:

Porcupine Singers - Wapaha Olowan

I tried to find a video of Heart Butte Special sung by Porcupine. But, the only one I could find had the mic shoved in the middle of the wicaglata and the sound was wretched :(

We're old ?

I remember when they were "The Drum" ! Everyone wanted to dance to them , much like Northern Cree and Midnight Express now !

BA, some links to older albums. No promises about finding the songs.

These are 50 year old Indian Records Recordings; don't expect modern sound quality. Most of these are an older style of singing.

Oglala War Dance Songs, vol 1

Oglala War Dance Songs, vol 2

St Francis Singers, vol 1

St Francis Singers, vol, 2

Sioux Travelers

Sons of the Oglalas, vol 1

Sons of the Oglalas, vol 2

Standing Rock Songs

Indian House Records:

Ho hwo sju Singers

Ironwood Live at the 102th Rosebud Fair

Ironwood Live at the 106th Rosebud Fair

Red Leaf Victory Songs

They have the old Soundchief recordings too. But that is mostly Cheyenne and Kiowa stuff.

Canyon Records:

William Horncloud, Traditional Songs
