Native American Heritage Stories

What is the community's thoughts regarding primarily white people that have nothing but stories of having Native American heritage? A prime pubic example is Elizabeth Warren, she herself says her family tradition tells of having some Native American blood, but no real proof. Although it may be a bad example as I believe she might have exploited it a bit in applications for school and such.

Myself, I would say I'm white, having ancestors from all over Europe but was told growing up that I have a minor amount of Native American blood as well from my Dad's side. The most I could get out of my Great Grandma was that we did 'back a few generations' but she didn't really know anything about it. *(that side of the family was pretty poor, most births were done in house and birth certificates and other documentation for that side of the family doesn't really exist). Outside of a family history of having a poor ability to grow facial hair (which I guess is mostly myth that Native American's couldn't grow beards), there isn't any real proof.

Now outside a rare conversation about genetic history this doesn't come up much. I don't go around claiming to represent the race, I don't know a lot about the culture, but I think it has given me an amount of empathy when it comes to how they have been treated.

Now that I have children of my own I'm wondering should I bother mentioning it to them? 5, 6 or maybe 7 generations past, has it become irrelevant?

I am Welsh on my maternal side of the family. I know nothing about the culture, the stories or their traditions, so I consider that part of my linege just part of my DNA.

I am Cheyenne on my paternal side. When I was young, my Grandfather told me of our ancestors, our traditions and some of the stories that have been passed down for generations. I may only be half Cheyenne, but that part always comes first for me. I am half Cheyenne and half white.

Being NDN is more than having some interwoven DNA. If I were you, as many generations away as you think you are, I wouldn't worry about telling my kids. A lot of people claim to have NDN blood, but that doesn't necessarily make it true. If you don't know what nation your blood is from, you won't know what to tell your kids anyhow. There are many NDN nations and they all have different traditions stories and beliefs. Hope this helps.

Difficult to say what is right and what is wrong. Whatever you do, it always can be criticized by a lot of people of all sides.

Do what your heart says you shall do and do that in an honest way.
