Natives from South of the Border at Powwows?

Have you seen or heard of any natives of the Americas from south of the border(Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Peru) dancing or participating on Powwows?

I used to lived in Utah from my early teens to my graduation years(class of 1999 Ogden High School) I was approached by Natives Ute and mistaken as one of them by many of them. At the time I was very young and not aware of my roots, now really really wish I could’ve attended to one of them, but I am sure that at least one my south of the border brothers are currently living in the USA and at least a percentage of them could have been attending them..

Have you seen them? would you be O.K with them?

Aztec dancers, we have seen. Rarely do we see other tribes from down south at powwows. I have seem them steal our ways and perform in Europe for money so I wouldn't be okay with them.

wanji,

Keith Sharphead (Cree) married into the Salinas family (Aztec dancers) and drums for them. He dances Chicken and may still dance Grass. Don't think I've ever seen the Salinas family come in on GE.

......Not to mention Kikapoo's and kumiai's form south of the border... SO these guys can't get into the arena?

Yeah I guess Wild Bill's wild west show could file a lawsuit LOL

Are you talking about dressing out and participating in a specific dance category ? Or are you talking about just hanging out and watching ? If it's an inter-tribal powwow....well the name is pretty self describing ! Inter-tribal , as in any and all tribes welcome......we even let white and blacks participate. All manner of mixed bloods.

Now , if you mean a Tribal sponsored , tribal specific gathering...well then probably not so much. We are all racists by the way , just to varying degrees !

I've seen Azteca Mexica dances at Victorville, Chula Vista,Fresno State, Pechanga, and Malibu Powwows.

The Aztecas were given a time slot during or after the powwow dinner break to exhibition their dancing.

oh nice thanks..

as for Hawaiians beeing "Native Americans".. I think so too, but Natives from North america and Central America(of Mayan lineage) share a closer genetic background than Hawaiians and Amerinds

I saw a South American dancer wearing his traditional clothing and an eagle bustle. Darn if he didn't blow a whistle on one of the drums! smh. Anyways when asked how he got is whistle and why he blew it he gave the generic, "I am a sundancer and I blew it for the people."

Let's clarify:

You said first that you are not ok with dancers from south of the border entering the arena because they steal plains dances and perform them for money in Europe.

For my part, I disagreed because based on that argument NONE of the southern tribes would be able to participate in powwows.

Nobody here was condoning prostituting these dances in Europe....

NOR were we condoning dishonoring the plains dances by blowing whistles with the wrong regalia while doing a dance from a different continent. SO I ask you this: What are your thoughts on someone from a post missions North American tribe dancing grass? Are you of the mindset that only plains Indians have the right to take part in these dances?

Are you of the mindset who doesn't know the answer? Every tribe dances grass, southern plains, northern plains, southwestern, north eastern, woodlands, California mission and Pacific northwest.

Hi Nicamarvin,

I am from South of the Border (that's funny I use that term, too, must be in the blood ) and I love the drum. I do go out at Intertribals and as I am a woman, I wear my shawl to be respectful. I'm not a great dancer but I do my best and I have fun... I go off beat all the time... Sometimes the song ends and I don't catch it so I'm still bouncing after it's over... LOL It's kinda funny. Lucky for me, I'm not trying to impress anybody just dance and hopefully participate in Native events.

It seems to me that our Northern relatives held onto the drum and the songs even through everything they went through, unlike many of us from down South who have lost our traditions when the Spanish attempted to eradicate us. Going out during intertribals can be very healing for us who have lost our connection to our own drums and songs. I love dancing! I feel very privileged to be able to participate like that. Sometimes I get a little sad, because I would love to learn the traditional Buckskin or Cloth dance but I can't. Because my people come from Central America, I wouldn't know where to start? What regalia would I even wear? LOL

I hope that gives you a different perspective at least. Do not be afraid that you are doing something wrong. Just be humble and make sure you know it's okay for you to enter the arena, when the MC calls for an Intertribal song, go for it. Also take your time to learn the step, don't go all express yourself, save it for the club. LOL
