Pathfinder

Hello, I was wondering if someone could please explain to me the traditional role of a Pathfinder? I appreciate your comments on this.

A car? I should need one when I am inside supermarket, to avoid people trampling on me feet on purpose when I am not moving fast enough forward at the conveyer belt and then telling me, it was not on purpose. I really should need a car to be more portected and a super market gps, why not?

In the 1940's, the Pathfinder was also used to direct anyone to the nearest available outhouse. He always carried toilet paper.

Smile Not the big box on wheels.

Ah, okay....I know about the stupid big car. Does anyone know about the Native American Pathfinder (yes, a person) and the role of this person? Seriously! The car is nothing but a big wasteful gas-guzzler driven by mommies.

Somebody's been telling you stories ! For 1 , the term Native American refers to 1 of over 560 tribes. So which tribe are you researching ? 2. You are asking about a particular position within this tribe , which may or may not exist ! I am Southern Cheyenne and as far as I know , there is no such position in our tribe. 3. I have never heard of this position in any tribe , but I am just 1 person and an official high school dropout so ......
with that said , a number of humorous responses tells me that most folks on here have never heard of such a thing either !

Good luck with your quest and welcome to the site !

And by the way , my brother had one of those "Pathfinders" and it was neither big , wasteful ,or a gas guzzler ! Nor was he a mommie (although at times he had been called a real Mother......)

The role of "Pathfinder" strikes me as one of those non-Native inventions. It fits far more with the non-Native experience of this land as a series of "un-explored" frontiers.

Native peoples had millennia on this land since the Creator placed them here. Groups came and went and moved. But, people had lived on and used these lands. They told their children and neighbors. They weren't stepping into unexplored lands, even if they were moving onto an area where they had never trod. The land was marked and measured by the hands of Native people.

For non-Native people, who were entering areas that had been depopulated by introduced epidemic disease and had no access to Native knowledge of this land, the New World was empty and unfamiliar. They had to make their own paths, when they weren't following ours.

I've heard tell of the great chief yonega of the fugawe nation. He was the original pathfinder until one winter he was leading his people over a snowy mountain pass.....

He got turned around, couldn't tell which way to go and said:

"Where the fugawe?"

I am very sorry, this does not fit here but I really am upset that I misplaced my old cell phone and can't even call it up since it's not on, I need some navigation to lead me the path to the phone.

Well, I give you points for remaining good natured. That is a change. Most non-Native folks who come here and don't get the answer they want get mad. So, thanks for keeping your cool.

That said, let me go for a teachable moment here. Why do you disbelieve the Native people here who are telling you they have never heard of such a role and doubt such ever existed?

Something that really frosts me, as a Native person, is to be contradicted or just plain disbelieved when I provide information about my people that doesn't fit with an outsider's expectations. Non-Indian people have appointed (perhaps, anointed would be a better choice considering the near-religious zealotry of some of these "authorities") themselves experts on the authenticity of our cultural performance and adherence.

I see this all the time with hobs and New Agers. The hobs make all kinds of snide asides about modern Native people and their cultural practices, from cracks about modern powwow regalia to contemporary ceremonial practices they consider inauthentic. (Where are your powdered wigs, with accompanying lice, and Latin masses?) The New Agers presume to tell me that they reincarnations of my ancestors or that ancient Indian people were too stupid to make Serpent Mound without help from flying aliens.

So, please, answer a question for me. Why do you disbelieve us?

I believe

Perhaps a better way to phrase my thoughts on the matter is this - whilst I didn't get the answers that I was anticipating, the answers I DID receive have indeed answered my questions. No disrespect was intended. Language is a crude communicator at times. I am just a little distracted and amused by the sidelines & jokes this question spawned!. My sense of humour is more than satisfied by it all, and in all seriousness, my questions are answered fully by the absence of the answers I expected. So, again, thanks to all, and yes, I do believe what is said to me. I respect and accept the answers given, just as I hope respect is given to the question. One more question, though - what is a hob? Not sure about that one.
