Question about Native American art?

Hello, I joined to ask a quick question about Native American art and patterns, particularly of tribes of New York and new england. I was wondering because I paint animal skulls as a hobby and wished to incorporate Native American art and patterns into my skulls. I don't trust a quick look at Google images to give me precisely what I'm looking for. I guess I'm just looking for beautiful examples of patterns and animal depictions. I'm asking here because I wish to know the exact origins of themes/symbols because accuracy is extremely important to me. I was also wondering if my incorporation of Native American themes/symbols into my skull painting would aggravate anyone? Thanks for your time :)

Probably. It is likely that someone out there will be offended by a non-Native person using their tribe's intellectual property. Don't think it is just because you're non-Native. I know Hopis who consider the Kastina dolls made by non-Hopi Native people to be an infringement on Hopi culture.

Why is it people think: "Hey, its a dead animal skull, what it needs is a layer of pseudo-Native designs painted onto it"? What's up with that? I live in Texas and come tourist season have to backstroke through sea of the painted cow skulls. To me the just don't scream Native American, they cry Hollyweird Indian.

I know, right? There's no accounting for taste; I know there are plenty of people who wouldn't appreciate my taste in art.

There must be a huge market, though. Growing up in Oklahoma, and living in Texas, I've seen my fill of cow skulls painted in "southwestern" colors, and sometimes with weird turquoise things glued on (or even hanging from the horns). I have a friend who loves that stuff, though. Takes all kinds.

LOL. My theory on the cow skulls is: A sucker is born every minute.

This reminds me... I have a cousin who likes to frequent thrift stores and junk stores. One time she bought these rustic, southwest-style chairs at a junk store, that turned out to have been made of the softest pine I ever encountered. I think she paid ten bucks for the lot of them. I sat one and it folded up, slowly, under my weight. It didn't break; the wood just sort of collapsed and bent, until me and chair were on the floor. It looked like a chair by Dada after I sat on it.

Now, my cousin is never one to miss an artistic opportunity. She broke the seat off the chair, painted a desert landscape on chamois from the auto parts store, hung a few beads and feathers off it, and put it on her guestroom wall. When she moved, she took the thing to a local tourist trap. it sold for nearly $100!
