Where to buy Native America clothes?

Hello happy people. I was hoping to get some advice on the best places to buy traditional Native American clothing. Specifically men's’ Native American clothing. This is part of a project that my teenage son is currently undertaking at college and it would really help with his research efforts. I thought that this would probably be the best place to ask this sought of thing rather than just doing a bog standard Google search, although I did find some interesting results here: https://www.easyprices.com/fashion/native-american-mens-clothing-cheap. I would rather defer to the knowledge and experience of other forum members. I am interested in online and offline sources and both new and secondhand clothes. If you can spare 2 minutes to give me some ideas it would be very much appreciated. I will look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Traditional men's clothes like t-shirts and jeans, LOL.

Do you mean dance clothing? Also, tell this ex-college instructor about this project of your son's?

What is this college project? Does you son intend to dance or wear these things?

You need to understand Native people have been studied to death. Hence we like to know why people are researching us :)

I don't know the full details. I'll have to ask him. But the last thing I meant to do was cause any offense. Apologies if I have done so.

Probably the same reason for when I say NO, people do everything to make me say yes or get it anyway. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Regalia is generally made by the dancer or their family members. I've heard a dancer say he was dressing his spirit with his regalia. Its design is often deeply personal. Elements may represent personal achievements, dreams, clan or society membership, family ties, etc.... Dancers may wear or carry items which they have earned, which can only be made by those who are appropriately sanctioned. It may contain parts of protected species, which can only be used by members of federally recognized tribes and cannot be sold or traded. It may have been ceremonially bestowed upon an individual. It may have been blessed.

These items have a lineage. They are an element that ties us into the continuing chain of our culture. The items that make up an outfit carry cultural baggage. They are more than just pretty. They speak of male and female roles, of traditional values, of a unique aesthetic. When I see a dancer with a crane headed whistle, an otter breast plate, flicker feathers, or a beaded spider, I recall stories and teachings. Yes, modern regalia has rhinestones, neon colors, sequins and lame'. Our fashion sense has always been cutting edge (once upon a time glass beads were the newest fashion from Italy) but deeply rooted in our ethos.

It is all of this cultural IP, if you will, that makes us leery or even angry when we see non-Native people dressed up in Indian clothes. It makes many Native people's blood boil when they see hobbists making society regalia or copying medicine bundles. The calmer among us wonder if these people understand the powers and knowledge to which they are presuming.

That said, there is a lively trade in making regalia for non-family members. I've done it from time to time. However, it is a transaction I take seriously, as generally does the buyer. It is not uncommon for the request to make an item to be accompanied by a gift of tobacco, indicating there is a deeper dimension. Among many Native people, the act of artistic creation is believed to impart a spiritual influence from the artist. For example, among my people the character of the artist, as well as her talent, was considered when getting cradleboard made. After all to make is to partake, in some tiny humble human way, in the experience of the Creator of the Universe. And to create is to communicate.

Further, to put this in blunt dominant culture terms, regalia is expensive. The supplies and labor involved make it so. Just in supplies, I sunk over $2000 into the last fully beaded dress I made. A nice set of beaded moccs will set you back $250-$400. And the artist will earn less than minimum wage. This is not something you buy on a whim.

Perhaps Wardancer charges you only 450$ for half beaded unworn moccs?

If you want to put one pair of mine to the test of durability on the circle, you get one pair (size 11) for free except customs and tax.

No , really , those were un-worn but had sat and watched many hours of powwow videos so they could help you dance better ! I'm sure that's why you won that comp last year ! And if I remember right , you only paid me $40 bucks on that $750 ! Where's the rest of my money ???

Show me, and I will understand.
Involve me, and I will learn.”
Lakota Proverb

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace.
