Define Elder

over the last summer i had an experience with someone at a pow wow who was an older person. he had the attitude that because he was older that he was an elder and was telling me and a few others that we were doing things wrong and to things this way.

to me an elder is someone who has experience and wisdom to share and doesn't condem or fault someone for doing things differantly.

i was thinking how does someone know that one has achieved the status of elder?

The idea -- just because someone is aged -- that their head is removed from their posterior is bunk.

1. The word "honored" does not automatically preceed the word "elder."
2. Nor should it.

Wisdom has little to do with age. I am aware of many old fools and/or brilliant youths.

Simply, you have achieved "elder" status when your counsel is sought. If it is not, you're not.

I have had alot of people do that to me. Just because someone is "Older" doesn't make them an "Elder" by any means.

This is something that can also be individual as well. There are many perceptions of Elders. Wisdom, knowledge and (in some cases) patience can be charastics of an Elder.

I was always taught (by my Elders) that it's not age and that even a 10 year old child can be considered an Elder.

I have Elders that some wouldn't consider Elders, but they share their knowledge with me and help me and protect me (even from myself sometimes), to me they are MY Elders. But they may not be considered that by others.

But, you can also learn something from everyone--even if it's simply "what not to do".

Your first clue that he or she was'nt is that he or she told you that they were an elder themselves. True elders don't go around telling people, I'm an elder... rather they are pointed out by people who know them as elders and are revered as such because of the way they handle themselves and the advice they give from their knowledge. What kind of different things were you doing at a powwow though? Even is this person was'nt an elder, maybe he or she had some good advice about how things are done there.

i was raised to with the idea that an elder was someone whose life was an example. someone who educates by way of doing something for the people, for example, Kevin Haywahe. he goes to pow wows all over both as a dancer and and arean director. he also started a camp on his res to teach. i think he also attempts to teach his native language too.
