I vaguely remember the Alcatraz incident, My father had just got involved with Lehman Brightman while he attended school at ASU in 1971. Then later with AIM when they took over the BIA building in Washington DC. Here in Oklahoma they had formed several chapters in 1972-73 and helped with our first tribal elections that took place and finally the White guy appointed by Truman was kicked out of office!
The early 1970's saw many Tribes finally rise up to be heard all over the country!!
Truly a great Man!

Few of people remember Lehman Brightman, Mel Thom, Herb Blanchford, Viola Hatch, Stella Leach Shirley Hill Witt and Clyde Warrior nowadays. They were overshadowed by AIMs more -- uh -- flamboyant leaders.

NIYC shook things up back in the day. They help lay the intellectual framework for the various movements of late 60's and early 70's. My Auntie used to get "ABC: Americans Before Columbus". Good luck even finding copies in big university libraries these days.

Lehman believed in non-violent methods such as MLK and Gandhi used but they take a long time to see any desired results. The early years of AIM brought a lot of discussion to the forefront but became bogged down in the mid 70's with Court cases and arrests. Really it was the Lawyers in numerous Court Cases throughout the 70's and 80's that we saw real progress in a lot of fronts. But I say it was the work of James Watt Reagan's Interior Secretary that we owe a lot to! You say who?? James Watt though totally unintended allowed Tribes to fully use gaming as a way to make up for spending cuts. His words "let them pay for there programs with Bingo" for the first time allowed tribes to really generate revenue. Has it been a good thing for everybody? No... But it has generated a lot of Revenue that would have not otherwise been there and really through the actions of a Mean Spirited Man we gained some measure of Independence...
