How do Native Indians view Inuits/Eskimos?

Greetings,

I have a question regarding Native Indian and Inuit/Eskimo relations. I have a friend who is of Native Indian background (Salishan of Pacific NW) and he told me quite bluntly that he considers Inuits/Eskimos of Alaska as a "lower" race compared to Natives. He basically said that they are closer to Mongols of Northern Asia and look like short "slit-eyed yellowmen" who have weird eating and cultural habits (like eating raw animals). I was wondering if this is a common prejudice that many Natives have regarding Inuits/Eskimos. Thanks for your response.

No, this is not common for anyone to think like that.

I agree with you on this.

As for me, I have a lack of information about Inuit culture, family and traditions. I like them but I need education to know who they are actually. I had a Inuit friend who is Deaf and I keep in touch with him on Facebook every now and then. So no, I did not get any education from him. I thought it is not polite to ask him about his culture and his tradition. That is just me.

You can learn about Inuit and not have to criticized how they look and what they do as Inuit people. We as Native Americans are pretty much like them only we have different cultures, families and traditions including different tongues (languages). Everyone of us are different. But the government made the rules as recognized to different tribes as Native Americans. I think they are recognized as Inuits, not Native Americans. Metis is the same way as recognized either Native American or Metis only.

Eskimos/Inuits

Unfortunately, the virus of racism is not limited to whites.
And your friend sounds like a racist, to use a much overused term.
ANYONE can be prejudiced against another group of people.
