when did multiple wives quit happening anyways?

was your tribe ever like that?
There were men among the Chickasaw who had more than one wife. I know that one of my ancestors had like 4 - that was back in the late 1700s. As far as when it stopped, I'm not sure. The second elected governor of the Chickasaw nation had 3 wives - that was as late at 1858. I'm sure that with the increased missionary activity in the area there was pressure for that practice to end.

interesting comment there. you even got times and dates that you can refer too.

as for me, i can recall sometime before i was born men with more than one wife. i wish i could totally recall their names but i cant. if i asked my aunts or mom they could prolly tell me.

one of our famous 'chiefs' had more than one wife.

My grandpa had 3- first wife, then second (my grandmother
's sister) but then didnt marry by grandma til her sis passed (although she had been living with them for a year or two by then).....

As for now? One I think my wife is way to jealous to deal with it. And, two, why would you want to subject yourself to that? Why would ask a second person to come beat me up when one is doing just fine by themselves? Although my marriage could use a housewife aye.

I think that wives should have the choice of 2 husbands. I wouldn't mind havin 3 or 4. That would be fun, except I wouldn't want to have all them children. lol The only way I would allow a second wife was if she was my slave, hahahah.

One of my friends is married to an Elder. There is always people visiting, needing a meal or assistence, ceremonies going on. Her sis and I go over and help her out. She told us once that she gets why some used to have more then one wife cause she said it's so much work for just one wife she wished there was a second one to help her out...never happened though. Just somethin to think about.

one thing thats out there is contract marriages. some folks sign contracts for like three or four years.. when the contract is due they decide if they wanna continue or not!! i was like reeaallly? i guess it keeps things fresh and moving.. i dunno.

being tradish there things that get done so that yer 'tied together' haha so its almost like if u leave it dont matter cause umm well anyways.. its the opposite of a contract marriage. maybe just one contract with the creator! haha

yeah theres thingas that can be done to "tie" a person to another, but if you know the right stuff, you can untie the string.....LOL!!!!!..............not that I'm against marriage or anything but to me, IMO, it's kinda pointless since most navajo girls out there now a days are about as dumb as rocks when it comes to cultural know-how (as for me, I'm running out of time, I can't be searching for the one).......teaching her how to cook is one thing, but if I got to tell her how the basic prayer is suppose to begin and end, *boom* kicked on out the door......I blame the parents......which is where I Thank my folks for raising me with the "get-it-right-slap-in-back-of the-head" love......LOL!!!!

How do they handle the legalize in traditional weddings? Are the marriages recognized, legally, if they were not performed by a JP, or recognized clergy? I know that I have been asked to produce marriage documents for my ancestors who have been dead for generations. The insinuation is made that they were not married, but I assume they were married in Tribal/traditional marriages, and no written records are available. I guess if you go back a few generations, you won't find any records, and many Natives had no last names. Who knows how names were taken after marriage? I guess there was a time when last names were assigned, or chosen. Our family actually has two different spellings of the last name in old records. The legend, lore, myth, scuttlebutt, says that one of our ancestors, a Tribal Chief, may have actually been an escaped Negro slave, but the history experts, just say may have been. I guess in their quest for accurate history, they like to put in the may have beens also. I've had some contact with many of the descendents of the said Chief, and none of them look that Black to me, in fact, some say that many of them look more White, or could pass. I think I look pretty much Indian, when in Texas, I was often mistaken for Hispanic, people were always speaking in Spanish to me. I would just say, Si, or Jose Quervo, or something. I read an article once about our Tribe/Band, it said that almost all of the Tribal members are descendents of these 7 men, and they showed the pictures of the 7 men, one was my Grandfather.
