Zeke, you are hilarious. I should introduce you to the bingo mommas where I come from... they put 300K on their cars in a year travelling to every bingo game in the territory. They really like stay-overs for brekkie too.

What has the conversation deteriorated to now? Are we still talking about hair or our (if they exist) love-lives?

I'm sticking to hair. Mine is below my shoulders now. If anyone cares.

I think mullets look girly, but not unattractive. My nephew had a braid down his back when he was younger.

Congrats! I remember you saying awhile back that you were trying to grow you hair out. The worst thing about growing your hair out is having to go through that horrible in-between stage.

Some of those mullets are atrocious!

As to the ongoing hair/length and men/women conversations going on? There seems to be some correlation to me, at least in how we perceive ourselves and my interpersonal relationships.

To wit, many Natives (men and women) use their hair to show or determine Nativeness. These people, typically, annoy me with specifically the ladies -- because they desire that "type" -- tending to avoid me completely. (Which is good because, when they don't, they eventually wind up believing me an arrogant a-s-s, anyway.)

Now, this is not to say that I dislike Natives with long hair. Heck, I know lots of folk who have long hair because they happen to like it. That's cool.

But folks who have long hair because they are Native, and they are making some sort of social statement, or believe that they "should" have braids, or attribute their hair to a religion that their tribe didn't even have/use, or act as if the longer their hair the more traditional they are...

Well, those folk can be annoying.

Right?

Bottom line? Iron Eyes Cody was Italian and wore a wig. Did the hair make him Native?

So how about when you visit an area full of NDNs and the men have their long hair loose, pony tailed or braided. I'm not talking about 2 or 3 guys. I'm talking about 'circle the wagons' number of men with long hair.

Do you consider that a social statement, an individual statement or a way of life because their father, grandfather and great grandfather wore it like that?

And about the women like the braids...anybody ever see Saginaw Grant at a powwow whit a little hottie under his arm? hahahaaaa What ever happened to the one that came on here say Saggy had proposed to her? lol

So Zeke, does your hair grow out long and black and flowing like 'Wind in His Hair'? Ever had hair past your shoulders?

I think the same thing that I do when I enter a room full of Armani suits and Rolexes: "Do you actually like this stuff or is it what you think you're supposed to look like?"

If it's a "way of life," it's an easy, petty, and selective one. (There are -- certainly -- more epic, transcendent, and noteworthy statements that could be made.) As to whether it's a social or individual statement, that depends upon the state of mind of the user/wearer. I'd hazard a guess that there are a lot more folks trying to appear Native than there are folks who have made some sort of conscious decision related to paternal lineage styles.

While I do have some earrings made by his brother, I am not familiar enough to note what has been under Saginaw's arm. That said, if they did it for the hair, I wonder what his motives were? I have a guess...

I'm approaching forty but have been pretty lucky on the grey hair front. As for length, I don't even like bangs as I am "warm blooded" and get hot when it's above 65 degrees. (I keep my thermostat at 62 during the winter and wear shorts.) But, "ever?" I've seen photos of myself as a child with that horrid, "Look! My little brown kid is an Indian!," flowing shoulder-length mullet. I looked, well, just ridiculous.

Good wine at a gallery opening? D--n, you must be going to some really upscale galleries. I've mostly encountered fair to bad to OMG did you leave the grape Kool-Aid on the counter for week, LOL.

On a more serious note. I'm not sure how you separate thought from identity from behavior. They're all pretty much a piece.

Thanks! I wanted to grow my hair long to dance, and I wanted to wear my hair the way my grandma and great-grandma wore theirs...in a bun. Once I got past the in-between stage, it started looking pretty good.

OLC, you should come to my next show, we serve pretty good vino collapso at the events...

Ok.. a hair tale...I was doing some volunteer work in the local pen (prisoner appeals and parole board hearings kind of stuff...) I was giving an info session on the changes that were coming down the tube to the Correctional Release Act.. the audience was the Native Brotherhood. One of their pen workers was present, big Mohawk chica with long braids, sun burned tonsils and an attitude that would make Cujo look like a Disney cartoon's fluffy bunny. Anyway the guys in the brotherhood thought she was cool as she looked "traditional" with the braids and headband and the abalone and turquoise jewellery and the mocs from Laurentian.

Normally she sat on an armless chair as she didn't quite fit in between the arms of those stackable, institutional chairs but this night, all the bros were out en mass so seating was limited to the chairs with arms... she squeezes herself into one of them and I kept thinking, man I bet she has to pay for an extra seat on the planes...

Come the end of the info session and folks are getting up. She goes to stand up and her braids get stuck between her hips and the chair's arms... she tugs a little and then a little more and then for the final tug... POP.. off comes her two braids stuck in the arms of the chair,, hanging there looking like two dead snakes... she was wearing clip on extensions... her own hair was just below her chin... I think this was the first time ever that I actually saw what a redskin really looked like... cause she turned every shade of red known to a colour wheel...well you can imagine what the bros thought and once the howls of laughter stopped the teasing started... one inmate grabbed her popped braid and beat it as if it were a serpent... another wanted to play pin the tail on the wannabe and every time they saw her after that, they would have some referral to the hair... she never did gain back their trust - made it a hard job to do her job.

Long hair doesn't make you anymore Indian than the beads and the turquoise do ... and I can attest.. extensions don't do it either... I'd hazard a guess to say the little old ladies with the Brillo pad top perms are more Indian than some of the creatures I've seen trying to imitate Rapunzel or what'shername from the Disney cartoon with the hair.

Just my two elk teeth

Nothing stereotypical of anyone's behaviour, back the the late 80s and 90s up here in Canuckistan, everybody was coming out of the wood work as the next skin that was going to save us all from ourselves. I'll take the brillo pad permed bingo grannies and aunties named Aggie and Flo over the Running Deer Over the Meadow chica that claims to be able to commune with the spirits and the four legs. Because when the ridiculously named with the long braids get tired of the racism, the closed doors and can't live up to their imagery of what Haida or Mohawk or Cree should look like and be like because that simply never existed, they cut their hair, dye it back to the mouse brown, start getting called by their real name and walk away from being Native leaving the Aggies and Flos with the brillo pad perms to pick up the pieces that they left scattered in the remaining Native folk's lives.

We are who we are, no fancy hair or jewellery on the outside is going to change that. If you don't know who you are or where you have come from then instead of thinking you need to look like the men and women who have it figured out, you perhaps need to spend less time looking for that squash necklaces or pipe bag and spend more time on figuring out why you don't know yourself. Long or short hair isn't going to make a difference.

Shawrakee, your posts are sounding very new agey and like a little boy who is trying to dress in his dad's clothes and not being able to pull it off that he's all grown up. Lighten up, take what I wrote as something to laugh at not get all freaking serious.
