Thumbs down

HOOO-LAYY!!...IS THERE NO END!!....
My wife tells me the word "Namaste"is a Hindu Greeting!!Used by people from India(kind of a greeting/blessing).
Spoke to my Sister, who is half Dine'from Tuba, and she tells me the term for walking in beauty is "Hozho",and that this encompasses all that is good in Dine' culture....beauty,harmony,and balance, and that many traditional Dine' take these things very seriously,so for this "woman"to use terms that have nothing to do with the Dine',Cherokee,or any other NDN people is a slap in the face to all that hold these values sacred....i wish that would stop, for real....keep smilin'1
P.s....Thanks to Deb and my sis Wolfie for their info. and insight.

I thought 'namaste' meant yoga in 'FitTV'!

Wiki tells me namaste is a hindu/indian greeting. Someone should tell this lady dat's da wrong kind of indian. Aye, its columbus all over again.

*uber sigh* I've had it up to here wit peepuls taking the Cherokee name for their own perverted use. Someone needs to make up a new tribal name that these peepul can play make-believe wit... perhaps a tribe that exists in their "plane" lol

The all-knowing wiki has also informed me that "Nokomis is the name of Nanabozho's grandmother in the Ojibwe traditional stories and was the name of Hiawatha's grandmother in Longfellow's poem, The Song of Hiawatha, which is a re-telling of the Nanabozho stories." Wow, um, Ojib... that's pretty far off from Dine'.

Not only is she a phony... but she's a stupid phony 'cos even a monkey can do a google/wiki search.

There are 2 idiots on there not just one. Did anyone read the other parts of it. They are asking for donations for their "spiritual" workshops. These two are way out there in my opinion. One is in TN and the other is in GA.

Ya, I totally checked it out.... woooooo! This lady calls herself Rev Dr Sandra Gaskin. I wander what her doctorate is in... 'cos whatever school gave it to her should be shut down. HAHA! You got to hand it to her... she's included every religion she could in her make-believe world. There's a website: Sprit-Works - Promoting spiritual awareness and guidance for life's lessons

In Kickapoo Nokomith just means grandma. So Nokomis is probably the Ojib version of grandma...

Outershell---that's my whole problem with this and so many others like it. That actually innocent people will believe this and send her money, but not so much the money as they will go to her for help or knowledge that she can't give them and then they go out a tell others and then there is a big mess and alot of mis-infomation out there floating around. Not like there isn't enough now, we sure don't need anymore.

Wow, the messes that these kind of things have caused. They are very hurtful to people.

Ok.. even though i know that my attempts to help usually make things worse; i left her this comment:

There is a huge difference between saying you are decended from Cherokee or Native blood and saying you ARE Cherokee or Native Blood.

If you really want to honor these nations, you might want to try learing a little more about them.
Your use of the words "namaste" & "nokomis" in your profile are so wrong its really kind of embarrasing.

Have a nice day.

I tried to be polite about it... really

I tried that too. I left this as a comment to the Gloria Alred blog entry of Sept. 21...

"My comment is not about this story, but about your profile. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say that I believe you have been misinformed.
First, no Cherokee medicine person would refer to him or herself as a "shaman", nor would other Cherokee refer to one as such. "Shaman" is Siberian in origin and has no usage among Native Americans.
Second, "namaste" is a word from India used in the yoga tradition and again has no usage among Native Americans.
Third, "nokomis" is not a Dine (Navajo) term.
Finally, if your mother was who you say she was, I am surprised that she did not teach you Tsalagi terms and traditions rather than those of other cultures.
I took the liberty of posting a link to your site on the Native Life forum of powwows.com. You might want to see what some real Native Americans have to say about it.
Please do not disrespect our culture by misrepresentation. It creates misunderstandings that complicate the work of keeping it alive and distinct."

and got this reply...

"David, I think you take yourself a bit too seriously. I am a card carrying Cherokee, was raised in the traditions, attend the pow-wows in Tahlequah,OK.. & you know what? It's all good. Just as we take what resonates w/ us, & discard what doesn't.. we create our own rituals & traditions. It's called evolution.
And God help us if we aren't all evolving souls on this earthly plane.
The Cherokees assure me if a person has even a drop of the tribal blood, that they are included, & are part of the One.
Aloha!"

I don't see any hope of her "gettin' it". She is way too spirichly advanced to let a little thing like respect get in her way.

Okay, she's out there. She said that she has a "Card"---did she get it from a box of cracker jacks? I'm not trying to be mean. I have many friends who are members of the CNO and family and friends from the EBC, so who is she trying to kid? I've never heard any of the crap that she's spewing on that site.

She's nuttier then Aunt Mary's fruit cake. That's all there is too it.LOL

... my first thought was "let me see that card"...

then... "aloha?

here's the reply I got:
"I'm happy & content in my heritage.. & can only feel sorry that these close-minded people are so much a part of what is WRONG in the tribal system today.
Folks, go play in a casino somewhere.. & leave the rest of the positive Cherokee folk alone.. or better yet, write your own damned blog."

"Absolutely true.. too many of us forget that we are Americans.. a gigantic meld of all types of societies, all special in their own right & even more dynamic in the meld.
My 1st thought was 'now I know how Barack Obama feels when people say he's not Black enough' As a quarter Cherokee, I'm still not Native American enough? ha
OK.. life IS short.. I'm going to go celebrate my Irish heritage today!"

there's also some other replies from others who have been grossly misinformed.

there is just still a lot of work to do....
