your least favorite holliday

When I was a kid, my family had a tradition that on every columbus day we didn't have to go to school.
We called this Indian Skip Day. I can remember how my teachers would play this guy up like he was some kind of hero or something, and I was kicked out of class more than once for telling it like it is, even at a young age. What are your thoughts on this. Did your teacher try to make you weare that stupid pilgrim hat too ?

Columbus day always had a bit of irony to it for me as a kid. I usually would just roll my eyes. I never thought it gave me any right to skip school, though.

But the pendulum is swinging back. People are using it to tell the true story and to remind all of the consequences of bullying and getting greedy.

Edit:
"bullying and greed" is too polite of term. I should say genocide, perhaps?

Holidays in elementary school were a big joke. Around the time of high school, all the Native kidz were given the Sept. Native American Day off and we the school recognized Columbus Day as a day off. Then they didn't and so we skipped that day, too.

I think St. Patrick's Day is a big joke, but, let the white folks have at least one day. Hey, you can't ever say that white people don't have any culture, ever see how they dress up for St. Patty's Day? Hollay!!!

I was so sorry to read this so here are just a couple of thoughts.
Maybe volunteer at the Salvation Army just for the day and it will make your day just to see people come in just to have a nice meal and to see a smile. Useully in like the Sunday Paper the week before Christmas there are all kinds of things that you can do to help volunteer even the hospitals are always short staff even for just the reception desk, go out to the nursing homes and just visit and give out suger free candy canes. So don't sit around and be sad go out and do something for someone else and it can help take your mind off your self.
Just my thoughts for what they are worth.

I always hated Take Your Daughter To Work Day because why can't guys take their SONS to work on the same day? Oh, I know: It was usually because NAG (uh sorry I mean NOW) would show up at school to tell all the little boys, "You are all going to grow up to be misogynists, male chauvinist pigs and potential rapists -- all of you!"

The way to celebrate would be to send your sons to school with Mexican food from the BIMBO food company.

My wife was born in Dublin Ireland, raised for part of her life in County Wicklowe.... and she could not believe what the US people get up to on St. Pat's Day - dying rivers green, drinking green beer, eating green bread and green mashed spuds or having corned beef and cabbage as an obligatory meal. She had no idea about wearing green on that day and was totally confused about the pinching part if you don't wear green.

Leprechauns (or the Sidhe) are a whole 'nother subject and don't have a whole lot in common with the little guy on the Lucky Charms box.

In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is just one more Saint Day on the Catholic calendar - you go to mass or don't go depending on how devout you are. The Irish gawk at the US tourists that come over with these fanicful notions - but from my wife's reactions to what goes on over here, the Irish don't have the slightest idea how nuts the people in this country really are.

i think the original of take your daughters to work was to try to balance out the centuries of "a woman's only place is in the home" for a long time women were confined to the kind of work they could do....
I don't think its true anymore. women today are doctors, laywers, truk drivers and anything else
(they still get paid less then their male counterparts but.....)
but true "take yorur daughters to work" has outlived its usefullness

change it to "pay your mothers the same as fathers day"

My least favorite holiday? To be completely honest, they all are. by that i mean this - the line of work that i enjoy the most i've always had to work weekends and holidays and i've come to accept this as a part of life, so much so, that i dread having any time off other than during the week. I've been asked if i'd like a weekend or a holiday off but i've turned the opportunity down. I would much rather prefer that my little part of the world kept moving and didn't slow down or stop, not even for a day or two.

For me Columbus Day is the day we celebrate some spanish dude that got lost
To truly celebrate this holiday correctly, We should go around knocking on doors and calling everbody we meet NDN and they give us Frybread

I was kicked out of class so many time for bringing up the fact that he never actually touched America or discovered anything,
since there were people on the shore to greet him

I always wanted to build a large ocean going canoe and trace his voyage back to the shores where he came from and land on shore and claim the land for all the NDN's
get some funny looks i bet
The same ones Columbus got 500 years ago

When my daughter starts in a new class, I always talk to the teacher and tell him/her that if my daughter ever come home with a pilgrim hat or one of those god awful "indian" headdresses on that I will have a BIG problem. Apparently, I am pretty intimidating for a short girl. She hasn't come home with anything yet. In fact, her teacher this year even asked if certain books were okay to read.

uhm as I recall the schtuff they crammed into our heads - Columbus was an Italian guy, son of a weaver, born in Genoa who was financed by the ruling monarchs of Spain.

...but then all dem white guys look alike ayeeeeeeeeee!

As for claiming Europe for the ndns, that WOULD be a hoot. Maybe we should start looking for someone to finance it, ay?

True he was born in Italy but once he took Spanish Money he fell under there rule and became a Spaniard, subject to the rule of the King of Spain.

Nationality was look at differently in those days
Once you kneed before a King and swore allegiance you revoked all prior claims to any other KING
That was the only way they gave him spanish money or ships.
On his first voyage essentially claim all of the Americas for the King of Spain.
But hey your right
They all look the same

Here is another thing
Indian Tribes in the United States are essentially Sovereign Nations right?
Since our Maps are out of Date
We go on a Voyage of Discovery and update our Maps
And since our maps show uncharted territory
We Claim this land at will and update our Maps!

Hey it worked before!!! We celebrate One Day out of our Year for the last guy that did it!!!
