Trouble i had a look at the link for making your own mres, i have to agree with some of the comments that what they are using are products that require a great deal of water to re-hydrate the food and they contain massive amounts of sodium. Most of the combat foods that we use are carefully balanced nutritionally and are careful on the amount of water needed to eat them while at the same time having enough water content to keep us hydrated. I'd be careful of loading up on too many of the suggestions the site gave.
oh i completley agree on the salt content, and the nutrition value, i just liked the idea in general as to being able to do such at a more econimical rate...and yes as you stated before , water filtration systems are a must!!!

Luckily we live less than 1/4 mile from the river, so I'm focused more on water filtration and purification than storage....although if and when I can afford a 7 year nuclear bunker, I would definitely have a lot of water storage..or a well dug straight down.

Here's my planning stages:
3 day Total Home reliance or BUG OUT bags

2-3 year shelf stable storage including water filtration (gravity fed with a cleanable ceramic filter)

3-25 year LONG TERM STORAGE

Each with various food/energy/shelter/security needs

A case lot sale is coming up at our local grocery and I'm finally ready to "JUST DO IT!!"

This is the system we use... http://www.lifesaversystems.com/

I have one of these too... Steri pen http://www.steripen.com/

I also keep some chlor-floc tabs on hand as well.

Pretty much the same stuff I have put together by June 1 of every year-the start of hurricane season. We always pick up extra stuff a bit at a time to get ready for it. It gets eaten, though, by November. This thread has me thinking it might not be a bad idea to start doing a bit more.
