Post Healthier Fry Bread

Okay. you will need
1. 2/3 cup WHole Wheat Flour

2. 1- 1/3 cups of white flour

3. 1- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder

4. 1/4 cup of non-fat milk

Mix all of these together and add 3/4 cup to 1 cup of warm water. Then in an iron skillet add i inch deep of veg. oil. Keep the oil hot! After you have made the dough, let it set for about 15 minutes. Then get a small ball of the dough and pat it into small circles. (make a hole/tear in the middle as usual) Fry in the hot oil until puffy, turning once. Stand upright in a pan with paper towels to drain the greasy fat from the bread.

Hope you try this one!
Let me know what you think.

I've had this before when they bring in these white nutritionists to the friendship center...I think it just tastes all wrong. Fry + healthy doesn't work...no matter how much else you change...sorry

I posted a whole wheat flour recipe too and it was the BOMB!! Of course I made it yeast-style and and 12 inch pan size and my frybread eating family was downing them like crazy.

I don't think it's that much healthier. Half of it is still white flour (my recipe too), and even whole wheat flour isn't all that great for ya. Have to still eat it with beans to get an appreciable amount of fiber. Plus it's good like that!

Organic Flour

If you're going to use white flour make sure it's organic!

Yes whole wheat in frybread is great,Personally I think it adds to the flavor and texture. Our recipe is..
5 cups flour
1 tsp salt
4 tsp baking powder [or so]
1/4 cup dry milk powder
mix these together, then add [I forget the actual amount]
enough warm/hot water to make the dough the right consistency.
turn out of bowl, knead a little then let it rest 10-15 min,
I cut several small pieces off then kind of roll them between my hands to make a sort of ball shape.let them sit a minute, then roll them out 1 at a time and fry.
We don't make a hole in the middle,do you do this with really big [or small]ones? or all of them?
Usually this is doubled or almost tripled,[I dont really follow the recipe any more.]

Thanks for posting!

There's many frybread recipes and tips posted here. You may have to change your thread settings to the BEGINNING. (When your at the Recipes forum page, look under the thread listings at the Display Options and change that drop down menu to Beginning).

There's also a lot of recipes alphabetically in the Recipe Index that's stickied.

Easiest fry bread recipe:
2 cups self rising flour
Enough water to make a dough
Mix just a little
Knead 3 times
Cover and let sit for an hour
Divide into golf or tennis ball size ball
