Haters gonna hate! I do have a very strong sense of taste and smell and I can pick up on the particular aldehydes that make up the molecules that make me want to burn down everything cilantro.

I didn't snack this year like I normally do. I had a late lunch of Taco Bell and for dinner I had homemade chicken and dumplings.

Have they bred milder cultivars for the mass market?

I remember when I first came to Houston in the late 80's and had cilantro in salsa at an outdoor cafe in August. I thought the stuff had gone off in the unrelenting heat and humidity. There was this incredible rank, soapy taste. I hated it. There was spitting.

Many tacos, banh mi, and cups of salsa later, I hardly notice the stuff. It doesn't even smell the same to me. Either it has gotten milder over the years. Or the stuff is an amazing neurotoxin that, with repeated exposure, destroys the "yucky cilantro smell" receptors, LOL.

It is often overused, but I like cilantro. My Dad, however... he spent many years living in Colombia/Peru/Ecuador. He hates cilantro, even the littlest bit. He had so much in South America that he NEVER wants to eat it ever again!

+++++++++++

I have very few food hang-ups; I'll eat most anything. But cumin has no place in my kitchen. It is NASTY!!!!!

You'd be doomed at my place, I buy cumin the bulk packages...

I don't have too many hang-ups about food either. However, I do believe in fair warning about look-alike foods. After taking a sizable helping of what I thought was mashed potatoes, but was in fact mashed rutabaga and parsnips, I warn folks.

I don't mind cumin.

Speaking of eating look-alike foods. My wife's uncle was at a restaurant (probably a buffet) and he thought he grabbed a big scoop of guacamole but it was really wasabi - he won't make that mistake again.

Mmmmmm - wasabi! If he ate a big ol' scoop of wasabi, I bet his sinuses were cleaned out for days and days!

++++++++++

Look-alike foods. I don't know about anymore, but back in the day this was almost a rite of passage for young children. It was a simpler time, and many a child mistook the scoop of whipped butter at restaurants for a scoop of ice cream!

A few years ago there was a cook in our cafeteria at work who knew no other spice but cumin. There was cumin in the Irish Stew; cumin in the fried catfish; cumin seasoning for the hamburgers; cumin in the vegetables...

Thankfully, she didn't last long. But while she was there, everything was just awful!

I smoked a pork shoulder all night and took it out around 10 AM on Sunday to let it sit for an hour before pulling it. Added sweet baby ray's sauce and plopped them on a toasted bun!! Yummerzzz!!

I also smoked three racks of baby back ribs in time for the ball game and had them with bacon-wrapped-jalapeno-cheese-poppers.

That's funny but, I've always thought of doing just that!

Like I am one of the first to be at the grounds and the last one to leave. That makes for enough time to get a smoker going and tending to it until dinner time and just indulge.

Fry's had a sale on pork ribs at $1.99 a pound and I stocked up for the spring time. Whole pork butt is already priced very low and it can feed a lot of hungry people.
