Question Christmas memores

When we my brother sister and I were young we could hardly weight in till cristmas morning to open our gifts we could hardly sleep imagining what we would be getting. The stockings were filled with small gifts and the tree was decorated elabrently with ornaments and lights and a star at the top of the the tree.we would sneak down stars to see things but we made sure we were sleeping before midnight. Just a jist of my family traditions.I don't see my sister or brother that much any more so its hard to keep our traditions. What are yours

i remember it as a time to just get over the cold winter season. Lots of work to do chopping wood, taking out the ash, chopping holes in the icy water for the livestock, feeding the animals in the cold mornings, helping deliver the calves and lambs, keeping the newborns warm ... it was a time of a lot of physical work for me no matter what hour it was.

Family time where everyone was nice, my mother "the maker". Small house with garden and snow in winter, Christmas tree in the house, a warm coal oven, turkey or goose dinners my mom made ever so great, puddings, cakes and gifts. My mom was the center of the family.

December 24 evening: Christmas tree, white tablecloth on the table under the tablecloth hay and one place more at the table for the poor wanderer, I and sister look at the sky for the first star, sharing the wafer Christmas Eve dinner is a sign of reconciliation, Christmas dinner on the table 12 meatless dishes and the this fragrance! every hungry because he fasted all day, singing Christmas carols Nicholas brings gifts, is cheerfully and solemnly and as time passes, at midnight we go to church for midnight mass, and two days the magic of Christmas

so it is in every Polish home was and is our tradition

One of my favorite Christmas stories from childhood is “The Little Drummer Boy” because even if I don’t have money & can’t buy a gift at the store, I can always give of myself, my time and effort. It’s the love that goes into making something or doing something for someone else that makes the gift special.

In my family growing up, in addition to making gifts for each other, we also used to make up coupons/gift certificates to give to one another. Like “Good for 1 week of not doing chores/I’ll do them for you” or “Good for a 20 minute backrub” or “I’ll do something for you” kind of thing. We got very creative & it was fun thinking up what you could do for someone else/what someone else would appreciate.

I’ve continued this tradition with my kids so they’ve learned the joy of giving & to have pride in doing their best with the gifts they make and to know what it means to help out others. I wanted them to know that Christmas is not all about consumerism & buying stuff made in China. Honestly, my kids have treasured a coupon for “Get to stay up 30 minutes past your bedtime” or “you get 1st dibbs or get to choose…” as much as some plastic toy. On the receiving side, my most cherished gifts are the ones that have been made with love.

I agree. My dad did that. And I to love the little drummer boy. It helps me to realise people care about others.
