We are Cherokee/ Prayer chant

Great Spirit look down on us
Don't let us die in vain
For we are the Cherokee
They can never take our name
*
They took our homes They took our land and put us on this trail
They took away our children and put our elders in jail
They marched us in the winter*through the freezing rain and snow
Without n'air a blanket to keep us from the cold
*
Great Spirit look down on us
Don't let us die in vain
For we are the Cherokee
They can never take our name
*
Our children and loved ones lay in unmarked graves where a river of teardrops flows
And each tear that touched the ground brought forth a Cherokee Rose
Chiefs Ross, Smith and White Path march beside us on our plight
But on a cold winter's eve in Hopkinsville Chiefs Smith and White Path died the same night
*
Great Spirit look down on us
Don't let us die in vain
For we are the Cherokee
They can never take our name
*
Our young braves are discouaged our little children are cold
The white man has cast us out for Mother Earth's land and precious gold
Our Holy men chant and sing for the prayers to be heard
The Cherokee are a proud people and not yet conquered\
*
Great Spirit look down on us
Don't let us die in vain
For we are the Cherokee
They can never take our name

Traditionally, Cherokees did not pray to a "great spirit" that is a Lakota thing. This mishmash forms of "borrowing" from other tribes is troubling and alarming. For those that dont know any better will think that this is an actual prayer not a fictional poem.
