I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place or not, but.... What is the best way to clean feathers?

Certain "Feathers" should be cleaned in/with traditional methods.
Others should be replaced if you think they are skanky enough to need cleaning.

Just my opinipn.

These are feathers from wild (for a lack of a better term) bird do they need to be cleaned a different way the fist time, or will woolite and/or soap and water be enough for a cleaning?

a good shampoo mixed with water. If its a tail feather with poop on it use a toothbrush (not your own).

Many different ways is right, if you get a feather that is tattered and worn looking just turn the tap on to a nice flow.. luke warm water, hold the feather by the fat quill end upside down and let the water run down the quill. Then lay it on paper towel to dry. Now if the feather is covered in crud of any kind, start off with dish soap like dawn or palmolive to remove excess oils and grime, such as tobacco or furnace oil residues. Take the soap and spread between thumb and fingers and gently pull the feather through and make sure you do this 4 or more times so that the soap turns colour of the grime in the feather. Then run it under water the same way till there is no more soap on it.

For extreme feathers such as road pizzas that make feathers so called ungatherable or useless... take a road pizza and soak it with soap and water in a big pail. Stir to separate the burger and bone fragments from the feathers. Let the pail sit for a few days in the corner. Then when you have a bit of time... seriously about an hour.. take the time to stir the mess gently,, so that feathers come to the surface... then lay them on the counter and follow the same steps as if it were grime. Then lay the wet feathers on paper towels. You can stack a whole pile of towels on top of each other on a tray and leave them to dry.
The last bird I got as a pizza I managed to honestly save well over 95% of the feathers in the pizza. I even found the talons!!!
Now to the drying,,, take the feathers that were on the towel for at least a day... so they are dry. Holding the fat end of the quill gently take your fingers and work from the quill outwards in gentle preening motions, like a bird will do. Then fluff the feather by gently blowing on it once in a while. Not only will the feather look like new again but no one will believe it was a road kill pizza!! seriously folks it does work.. I have done this with hundreds of poor road kills that I pick up and I have gifted many bags of feathers this way. Have fun!!
