I also add strips of thin fur down the extension, otter seems to be a good short hair along with marten. Gives it a great contrast feature. On some, I stop part way down the extension and slide on a decorative silver tube bead, then continue with the fur the rest of the way down the extension.

bamboo skewers. They are stronger than wooden dowels because they are flexible. Plus any thread work will look better on them since they are thinner.

When you go to work with the main feather, how much of the quill do you take off before adding the extension?
I got supplies today :)

Just cut the tip off so that you can bury the skewer way up inside and add lots of glue inisde the feather!

Goop is the glue to use, thick and won't run on you!

Thanks, Im doing a practice run right now, just to see if I can do it. I found 4 little goose feathers in my stash that Im attempting on. The quills are to small to put the skewer in, but Im going to atleast try and see how it turns out. Im using Aleenes quick dry glue at the moment, but will have to see if I can find some Goop next week when we go shopping. Then I gotta see if I can find something for a make shift handle. If I can pull this off on my practice run, I wanna pratice a few more, then see what I can do with some bigger feathers. Might have to run to Petsmart and see if the Macaws have shedded any yet.
Thanks again!

This tutorial was very helpful, thank you for taking the time to write it. I've done 2 feathers so far and they are looking pretty good. The only downside is I got the florette feathers from crazy crow and now my house smells like moth balls lol.

Do you have anything pic-wise to show, so I get an idea of what you mean?

I'm a newbie at the florette work, and I've got the basics almost acceptable, and now I'm trying to mesh threading and the feathers together. I notice a lot of different ways to make it look polished. Any advice on that?

If you can get your hands on artificial sinew, split it in three strands. Then take one strand and start by applying your sinew around the big quill then slowly add your feathers in and overlay effect, the fancy plumes go on top with the florrette work and simple fluff underneath. When I feel I have the correct level of plume/florette, I take a small strip of the short haired fur, even chipmunk looks great here, and goop it around the skewers in strips. I temporarily clamp the fur in place by taking a shoelace and wrapping it around the fur till the goop has settled and dried overnight! Next day I will remove the shoelace and then fluff up the fur again. You can use rabbit pelts too from any of the craft supply shops.
To get rid of that mothball smell, smudge what you use!!!
I do that with a basket, a frame holds the basket about a foot over the top of my smudge bowl and then once the smudge is lit, I take a blanket and cover the basket with it and keep all the smoke inside and let it go till it is done. You would be amazed at how well this removes scents on things that you do not like! Moth balls have no chance with sage!

I am so greatful for finding this post and the time it took for all the information that was given. I have found some info "Whispering Wind" it was an interview back in Sept - Oct, 2006 http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m.../ai_n29306070/ if you click on this it will bring you to the artical. (copy paste) it has info on where to purchase thread also.

I hope it will help others, I'm in the process of making 2 for shadow boxes
1 for my sister and myself. I'm no longer able to dance Traditional Northern Buckskin due to an accident but I still enjoy doing the little things and giving as gifts.

The Beat Goes On!!!!!!!!
