Crib liner is that thick fabric u put between the crib matress andthe sheet. They used called lap pads. U can buy them at walmart for like 9$ and u get like 2 or 3 pieces almost the size of a crib matress. U can use it for beading anything. It doesn't unravel at the edges and is thicker than canvas. I made a pair of moccs. out of them 21/2yrs. ago and I haven't had to mend them once.Saves a lot of time and easier on the fingers,Not to mention cheaper

Blackbear your work is beautiful!

That barrette is so beautiful and professionally made! You're a true artist! I wish I could learn beading. Any suggestions for a novice? How to get started in Beading 101. I love stuff like this! You Rock!

how about looking in the archives for a thread entitled bead applique that I did, combine that with this backing a barrette and you will be on your way to making barrettes!

Also there are many beginner books and instructions online in different areas.... I would suggest Horace Goohue's book of offloom beading to get you started with some basic things like daisy chains, and peyote stitch. It's a really good book and easy to understand. as for instructional websites.. just type into your browser , beadwork + how to and see alll the sites that come up.. also you can check the links section here at pws.com and see who has what listed...you'd be surprised. then go buy you some beads, needles and thread and try it out!

Thank you so much Blackbear, for your valued advice!

I will look for that Horace Goodhue's book. I'm probably little old to start this craft, but willing to try! Yet when I see your beadwork, I admit it gets my adrenaline going. I feel I can at least inquire/read about it, and try! Thanks So Much Once Again!

Your fantastic barrette!

Wow, thanks for alll the hints for making such a perfect barrette. I never would have thought of using an old card on the inside to stiffen it. I hope your barrette won, it is so awesome!

I got a blue ribbon for it! :D I so proud! And then I gave it to my aunt to give to her granddaughter. You know, old card is great, and so is the plastic from lids like butter tubs, yogurt lids (local dairy here puts a plastic lid on their yogurt cups) cottage cheese. It's about the same thickness as milk jug. But as others will tell you, the trick to that is to cut it about 2mm smaller than your beadwork so you don't have to run the needle through it and it's a little sturdier. I don't use old cards much anymore unless i need a backing that large.

I am so proud for you!

<B>That is so awesome that you won! How cool. I quess I understand about the plastic lids. I am going to attempt to make a barrette. I only have one and it is just too big. I want to make a smaller one, and also want eagle feathers in the pattern. Do you know of a good place to find great patterns (other than out of a tired brain LOL!)? <B><P>
<B>Again, I am happy that you won at the fair with your beautiful barrette!<B><P>

Not sure if I'm putting in a barrette... I have a beaded picture frame I'm entering this year.. was going to last year but the dates and times for entry were'nt very clear and I missed the deadline.

I would love to see a photo of the picture frame when you are finished, if you wish to share. You are so talented. I admire your work. I still have not attempted a barrette. Guess I am just afraid that if it is not perfect, I will not like it.....wish I were not a perfectionist! LOL

I'm thinking I posted a pic of it in general crafts under the Fword thread... you might have to go back a few pages to find it .. it's not a great pic though.. I for some reason cannot take a reasonably good pic of that frame, and it's so colorful too.. going to have to scan it I guess when the scanner is fixed.

Picture Frame

I will try to go find the frame.......hey sometimes it is cheaper to just go and buy a new scanner than have one fixed...I don't know if you have a Comp USA where you are, but they are always haviing great deals. Someone I knew got a scanner for less than $100.00. For me that is a lot of money, but I guess it really isn't compared to how much scanners used to cost.

Can I ask a dumb question??

But with those kind you can get them as small as one inch.. good for kids. I usually add a layer of plastic and cut the holes in the plastic for the barrette to go through, but this was already pretty thick..and I just can't hack beading through the plastic itself!!! OUCH on my fingers. Glad if this helps anyone out though..
I know this is going to sound stupid, but do you bead on leather BEFORE you cut it out into the shape of the barrette, or afterwards...sorry, I do not have anyone to teach me. Just books.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Whispering Eagle

no I don't bead directly on leather at all.. I use mostly ez felt (stiff felt) or baby lap pad depending on the size. the leather is backing only and I glue it to the barrette and trim around the barrette instead of trying to cut out a piece of leather that matches the shape of what I'm beading.
