Well you guys see that banner under my name? well under where it says in the big blue house....I got that cause this is the reason I'm here!! To answer questions about beading to the best of my knowledge... so ask away , contribute what you want, discuss methods, materials... ANYTHING to do with beading except for buying , selling or trading... that goes in the trading post. But don't anyone think that they are bugging me by asking .. if it bothered me I would'nt be a moderator ok? I also do not "know it all" so don't be disappointed if I cannot answer a question.. this is also why I am not the ONLY moderator here... there's also WyoRose and Powwowbum and the scores of others here that have beading experience and love to discuss it.

Personally.. the next time I make a crown I'm useing the stiff felt... the kind you buy by the yard though.. like the stuff I was mentioning you can get at walmart (except gonna use the timetex that mezzo sent me. Thanks Mezzo!!!). It saves my fingers and is still enough on it's own, but I'd still back it with proabably a second layer of the timetex. Now that might seem thick at first but once you get the bead edging on, it does'nt seem all that thick.
As for how they close in back... most use a length of elastic and cover it with a back barrette... Me, (because I am tuscarora and ours are velvet) I use a snap, that way I can lay mine flat also. My crown (we call them tiaras) is made of the fun foam covered with the velvet and then beaded. Backed by a second layer of foam covered with the backing material.

Thanks you guys

<b>I need to stop being afraid to try and just dive in there and do it. I need a barrette, I need to bead my mocs, I want to make a crown, want to bead a head piece that will hold plumes, etc, etc, etc. I am a visual learner and it is hard not to "see" someone doing it. ....sigh...I am just going to start and stop whinning about it! LOL!

hello Black Bear

I hope im in the rite area for this question and if im not im sorry but I was just at your web site and the things you made were very nice! loved the flowers, where do i find florals similar to those? Im Southern Cheyenne and we dont do much florals but one of my frinds has asked for some hair ties and barrettes with flowers on them and not real sure how to do them I do applique and lazy stich im sure flowers can be done that way cause ive seen it and i cant find any flower pics im sure if i found one she liked i could find a way of tracing it then coping it to the pelon I use to bead on. Your roses were so life like ! very nice. Ive been wanting to do roses for a while i have had some really kewl ideas useing roses and feathrs sounds wierd I know but it seems as soon as I think I have a wacky design I find people who love it but I guess thats what makes the world go around . thank-you for shareing Eagle Plumes.

Honestly I drew them out myself from pictures of real roses. I just found a pic of what I was looking for and then line drew it on paper.. by that I mean just an outline, no shading or detail. Transferred it onto my beading material and filled it in with beads. You want to know a cheating way of doing it though? Find a pic of a flower online.. print it off, and with tracing paper, trace the outline of the flower and whatever small details (such as the stamen or where the color changes in a flower). Make sure you print it off the size you want though. You can take the tracing and with a little spray adhesive or a some very thinly spread glue, just glue it to your beading material and bead right over it.

hello blackbear. I would like to know if, when ever you start beading a barrette do you cut out the shape of the piece you are working on first. Say the shape of the design. Or, do you cut out maybe a square, then trace and bead. Your help will be appreciated.

I have a idea for you.

Im not Black Bear but, all my applique starts on pelon/felt with the design and shape drawn on it like if the main shape of the piece is a circle i draw out my design and draw a circle around the whole thing nd bead away its really very simple if you can get it on what ever your beading on just bead over the top of your pencil drawings, and i tell people who ask for my help to if you want say a strait line draw it strait because if your pencil line looks off so will your beading that sounds odd but i have sat with people who were up set with the way their work was comming out and they took it out i saw that the lines were not strait or whatever the design was and i told them if its drawn thatway you will more than likely bead it that way does any of this make sence? its kind of hard to get my point across on the screen. if you have any questions about my anwser please tell me and ill try again.

Thank you Eagle Plumes. I do understand. One more question. Say I drew my design on a piece of line paper. Could I glue it to the piece that I am going to bead on,then bead over it. Or is that not a good idea. Thank you again.

I have heard of beading on paper there are some on here who do im sure they could give you some great tips on that like what kind of glue to use and such. The way I do it there is no glue involved unless im putting on a rinestone somewhere on my work. but good luck and let us know how things are comming along or if you have another question! happy beading.

Sorry I did'nt see there were replies here earlier....

Ok yes sometimes you get little pieces of paper, that's why I glue the paper to the backign material if I have traced it. If you glue you are'nt going to get little pieces of paper flying around. Or you can use pellon's stitch and tear and it will tear away from the outer edge of the beadwork when you are done.

As for how to start it... put the design down on whatever you're beading on... cut it out anyway you like but leave yourself at the very least a half an inch all the way around your design, but try not to leave corners. If you cut square, round off them corners or your threads will catch on them. Do not trim again until the piece is fully done.

Thumbs up

Sorry to have to ask- but where does the plastic or cardboard piece go? How is it cut? Thanks for posting these lessons. Beautiful beadwork by the way! Where did you find that shell?
Good JOB:)

Good JOB:)
It goes in the center... between the beadwork and the backing leather.. I trace my trimmed beadwork and cut the plastic about a 1/4 inch smaller than the outer edge of the beadwork, glue it in place, then put the backing on and trim the backing to match the beadwork. And thanks for the compliments!

Redda... please post a pic when you're done!
