I usually use a regular seam allowance, and a single thread, with a backstitch, I find it is sturdier than a running stitch and there is less possible shifting and puckering this way.

This is just what I've done and it works perfectly. I used to use a brown paper bag as a pattern, and you can fit it directly to the shoulders of whoever, so it fits better than a commercial pattern....
