Aluminum roof flashing is basically a big roll of sheet metal. It can be found in almost any hardware store, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. It comes in a roll of 50 feet with various widths available, up to 36". I got a medium weight thickness with an 18" width for around $25-$30 if I remember right. I suspect I'll get enough jingles out of it for 4-5 adult dresses. If you don't want so much material, get a narrower width. The aluminum cones are lighter in weight than tin lids but have a more musical sound. Plus, they will never rust or tarnish. The bummer part is that the cones are plain, with no engraved decoration.

For making my jingles, I use a heavy plastic template of the jingle shape which I scratch onto the metal with the point of an awl. Then I cut these shapes out with tin snips and roll them. Its a little extra work but not too bad. I'll see if I can scan in some cones so you can see what they look like.

Attached is a pic of the template I use to cut my jingles from the roof flashing and three rolled cones. I make two sizes of cones and this is my larger size at 2.75 inches long.

Talking cones

I have Mac Pherson`s on my dress too and I like them. They don`t rust or darken. One of my friends uses Missouri and she has to polish em all the time. I like their sound too and I can`t say they`re not loud enough for me. I never tried sitting on them though so I can`t comment on the thickness. Just my 2 cents.

Awww poor Shanlyn.

I don't much care for the McPhersons cones myself, Shanlyn. They are lighter and I do prefer the heavier ones for the sound. They did rust out on me far quicker than the Redwood.

Sy.....yeah Redwood cones are really good. Nice sound and they seem to last a long time. I like Copenhagen too for the same reasons.

well, i had those mc pherson's that i used on two of my dresses and i hated em!
they tarnished fast and they rusted and then left a rust stain on one of my dresses that wouldnt come out.......sooo i dont think i'm gonna use mcpherson's again, unless i'm stuck.

Mcpherson cones really suck...I wish the person who made them would make them better..yeah they do rust really bad. But they are noisy, if they are rolleed larger, i have used redwood and they are way too light for me, they are like wearing nothin, but if you want the noise look for jingles that are a little bigger and rolled a little wider..other than that i hope your dress turns out beautiful. Dang, who wouldv'e known that there was a difference in jingles (that's what my cuzzin says)!

Yeah the McPherson's are bad...mine got soooo dull looking...then they were dirty when I bought them so they had to be cleaned before I even put them on my dress...Plus...lol...they are rolled so wide..they're too big. I like the redwoods because they are shinier and they last so much longer. I also use the kind with the eagle feathers...or the floral ones that say Indian Time...those are really pretty.
