You know....part of the answer here is-that the Eastern and Southeastern in particular, did NOT have a history of Powwow dancing. There really are no elders to tell them how to dance. Unless it is The Green Corn dance or other ritual dances. The Powwow is a Western and Okla. dance that has spread all over the country in the last 50 or more years and into the Southeast the last 30 or so. The direction has been from Oklahoma....and their drums and music. The Cherokees of Ga. learned from NFICS as well as the Many of the Semiole People who came to these dances and took them back to their groups.

THen we start seeing the other dances in the the mid to Northern part of the state and so on. It was seen that the Powwow dancing was more fun to the individural dancer and later brought in money for groups who wanted to show off Native American Culture.

So the question might be, where did your "elders" that some of you listen too learn their danceing????

who's the more foolish?...the fool,or the fool who follows her?

so you took some bad advice...almost everyone's done it at some time...there's nothin wrong with wanting to believe someone, and yeah, it sucks when you find out later that person is a moron! Unfortunately you can find booboos everywhere...looking for some sense of power by preachin that their way is the only way. So, the only way for you to grow is to move on, change those ways, and make sure you don't pass on that faulty "expertise". Don't feel bad and don't let anyone else make you feel bad.

who's the more foolish?...the fool, the fool who follows, or the fool who judges the follower?

ok, back to my Rainman quote...definitely, definitely...lighten up people...don't take life so seriously, you'll give yourself an ulcer!

I guess I could count next time, but it really depends on your drum that is singing for you and how they beat the drum and what song they are singing. If you get Cozad, they will sing without the drum beat sometime and you have to go with the song.
It's really not a mathematical equasion, it's depending on the drum beat and the song.
MEE TOOO!!

BTW--THis is what i wanted to reply to..lol.

THere is a lil gurl in NM that raises her fan to honor beats. She use to dance northern, so she dances southern, and still keeps the fan waving.

I think a lot of this problem of people doing things that some others think is wrong comes from...who owns the dance style? By owns, who can decide what is "right" and what is "wrong"? My family lives in the Northeast, but my mom learned about powwows with her family in Oklahoma in the 50's. I am sure that powwow is different now than it was back then, but some things shouldn't change because they have meaning and that's why people do them (in my opinion). You don't see many southern style dancers up here in the Northeast but now there are a few who are starting to wear the cloth dresses, and dancing or wearing parts of their outfit that to me just isn't "right". I'm not saying you have to be from Oklahoma to dance but you should at least have your family, or friends or someone, teach you how its done there because that's where the style comes from! Seems to make sense to me.

I've reread the original post, and the posts by the OP. I get what you're asking and saying...I mean,I understand what you've been told. I've heard that information,as well. And have been known to correct more than a couple of ladies on it. :wink
Seriously, look around this forum and read what people are saying to you. The information you were given was incorrect,or half true,at best. Yes,some cultures say the honor beats represent gun shots. You don't have to look up to salute them(or honor of Veterans) and you don't have to duck down like you're about to be shot, either. :LOL Again,I say, listen to the drum, the song,it will tell you what your feet should do! And leave that fan down. You're not a Northern dancer. Raising your fan looks strange...like mixing styles. And not only that,it draws attention to YOU. The way I think is that we're supposed to be humble out there...what you're wearing kinda dictates that, you know? Raising your fan and doing robotic movements only serves to draw attention(most likely negative attention) to you.
