Haliwa-Saponi Federal recognition

I am sure a lot of people may know that the haliwa-saponi tribe want federal recognition, how can they want federal recognition when they will not allow people to join the tribe. The tribal roll has been close since 1997, because they are trying to get federal recognition. Once they get it people still may not be able to join if they are over an age,if you not 1/4,if your parents was not members. That sound like bs how can you say you can not be part of a tribe because you are over a age. How can you be mix with black white, and indian and say you have to be 1/4 there is not one full blood indian in the tribe. How can you say your parents has to been on the roll when you will not open them to allow them to join. Can someone explain how they can want federal recognition but will not allow people to join?

Why do you bring this issue to a world wide forum where most people don't know, or even care, who the Haliwa Saponi Tribe is? Why don't don't take up this agenda personally with the Haliwa Saponi Tribe in Hollister, NC.

Every tribe has their own enrollment criteria, and a lot of it is political.

Change what you can, and accept what you can't change.

That is why there is a COMMISSION OF INDIAN AFFAIRS in Raleigh, NC for such matters as you have brought forth. Take your issue to the Commission for resolution. Did they not let you enroll when you petitioned for enrollment? Did you meet their criteria? Do you have literal blood ties to the people of Hollister?

There are several ways you can address your concerns and all of them require you to contact your official government representatives at both state and federal level.

As such, I am curious as to why you referred to membership to this tribe as "to join"? One does not join a tribe one either belongs to a tribe or marries into it. One can not join a tribe as if it is a social club like the Shriners.

There are many cases where enrollment has to go to the person next in line that is entitled to be enrolled. One can not jump over a parent or grandparent if those relatives decide not to enroll.

Again, I ask as I have whenever someone creates a thread about not being able to be enrolled, where are the rest of your relatives? Do you not have one single enrolled relative? In most cases, the person complaining about not being able to be enrolled can not find one single blood or direct relative that is enrolled. At that point one has to ask, why isn't there anyone else from that family? Tribes are about people and their relation to each other... not whether you get a per cap or a commod box every month. If you can grasp that concept, you'll answer your own questions.

My all of my mother family are enrolled in the tribe, so proving that I come from this tribe would not be a problem for me and when I use "join" it was a bad word choice

The saponi go back the list of those who were at fort Christiana in the 1700s and requirements for most groups are simply being able to trace a relative back to one of the families listed (most of the people were only listed by first name or nickname, those that had a first and last name of course are able to trace back). A few families have things locked up in some of the groups and it will likely stay that way unless you are a relative. I don't see how they would get federal recognition when their standards don't meet the stringency required of other recognized nations, but then I don't know how all that works. If they have political connections within those families, if they want to open a casino or something like that that white people want, then maybe they will. Some groups let in too many and that is why you are seeing a backlash. When you go back that far, alot of people are related.

Fairness in all this has gone out the window, if it was ever there, a long time ago. In my opinion, true sovereignty to recognized nations would help all people and restore balance. This would help relations among all people. Why not contact one of the other Saponi groups? They are working to reconstruct what ever remains. They may be more receptive and know the people in the other groups and might be able to help you, if this is important to you. I don't know what anyone thinks here but I have found them to at least be responsive outside north carolina, and they try to be helpful as they can be. Maybe they can give you the name of someone you can write to in NC and make your grievances known.
