Questionable Item on Ebay

Do any of you out there think these are REAL eagle feathers? This just seems really WEIRD that the bids on this fan would be so HIGH if the feathers are fake.

Ya think! I reported it yesterday and nothing yet. Hopefully they'll get some more "anonymous tips."

That would be awfully small for a true eagle tail. They might be hawk though--I have seen some hawk tails that look just like those that are in that size range.

Yeah, but look at them! I don't know any hawk feathers that look like that.

These are the hawks I'm talking about. This is from the collection of a friend of mine. I thought I had a picture of them somewhere. I have seen this fan, and the feathers are definitely to small to be anything but hawks. My guess is that they are really good paints or they are hawk feathers from this type of hawk (I have no idea what type of hawk that is...)

I believe they are Winterhawk. I have just had a fan made with some. Mine is the darker tip, a real deep brown. I also have a set of the lighter, more speckled ones.

They make great bustles too.

What is a winterhawk? If I don't mind asking.

Trimmed rough legged hawk feathers of certain sub-species can look like small eagle feathers.

White powwow dancer: The feathers I referred to as "winterhawk" are labeled as I was told. They were traded to me for some sewing by a well know traditional dancer. His son has bustles made of what he calls "winterhawk" feathers. I did a search and could not find a bird called "Winterhawk" but I found that the roughlegged hawk and marsh hawk come close to these types of feathers. I am assuming that they are hawk or falcon feathers of some sort.

If that is not what they are called - I apologize - just going by what Ruben told me.

There is a guy out east here that cuts and paints turkey feathers. They look like the real deal (eagle) in pictures and from a few feet away. Get real close and you can tell that they are fake if you know what you are looking for.

There are other craftpersons who do paint feathers all over. Some look real, others look fake from 100 yards away.

In my opinion, the fan on ebay has some very good "imitation" immature golden eagle tail feathers.

One clue that sticks out for me is the dark line that follows both sides of the quill on a number of feathers, as if the ink ran, staining the feather but not the quill. With "real" feathers, the quill turns dark also.
