Bold Homeless People

Do homeless people get on your nerves? They get on mine... mainly because they have no humility anymore. It used to be homeless people would be nice to you, ask you how your day is going, make sure your mom's alright, clean your windshield or whatever, and then ask you for a quarter or whatever change you had. They'd actually work for the money. But now, homeless folks are lazy... bold too! The other day this dude walked up to me and was like "Hey player, lemme get a dollar". Didn't even ask for it, just told me to give him a dollar. I'm like "A DOLLAR?!?!" I gave him a strange look and kept on walking. He followed after me and was like "C'mon man, help feed the hungry." I said "Oh I am, I'm on my way to Burger King right now." I guess he figured from that cold-hearted statement that I wasn’t gonna give him any money, so he finally left me alone. I mean he wasn't even gonna sing a song, do a little dance or anything... just wanted me to give him a whole dollar...for nothing… at least tell me a joke or something… amuse me.

But that's not even the worst case I've seen... just this past weekend I saw this chic who had been stopped by this homeless guy. I guess she felt sorry for the guy or whatever and decided to give him some money. She hands the guy some change and starts back on her way. Well apparently this woman's change wasn't enough for the guy cuz he's like "Wait Miss! Wait!" She turns around and she's like "What?" He said "Can I get your number too? Maybe I can call you when I get back on my feet."

These dudes are too much. Anyone have any run-ins like these with homeless folks?

Some of them are wising up, they will come up to you and the first thing they say is "hey, I just started a job, but I havn't got my first paycheck yet, can you give me a dollar." I guess from too many times being told to get a job.

Once a year I like to remind myself to be thankful for what I've got. I will go downtown, pick up a homless person, bring him to my home and walk him around the housing asking the homeless guy "do you have one of these? How about one of these?"

One time this older white woman; was standing outside a large grocery store, I gave her a dollar probably because I was in a good mood. All she could say was "god bless you this and that.'' About a year later; I ran into the very same woman panhandling in another part of town, when I had no money to share. Guess what, she called me a "F'n, b--ch!" That is the last time I have even looked in the direction of a homeless person, we have so many here, I guess they believe Alaska is the place to run off to, when their luck runs out elsewhere.

Actually I find it kinda sad WW cause the majority of our homeless and panhandlers here in Alaska are alaska native. But there was that one guy... claimed to be a War Vet that the paper did an article on a few years ago... that got his business license to panhandle and would stand on this one corner where traffic is often backed up and he was pulling in over a hundred grand a year on HANDOUTS!!! But.. he was doing it legally.. go figure.

$100,000/year?????

A homeless man was pullin' in over $100,000 a year? So if he slept for 8 hours a day and pan-handled the rest of the time....he was makin' over $17/hour. HUH!! that's more than me.lol.

are u sure about that $100,000/year??????

There's all kinds of homeless people in Seattle. I don't give money to really bold homeless people - 'cuz they scare me:( & I don't want them in my life.

But MAN!...there were times when I was soooo broke w/ no food and no family....it sux being poor in the city. I was to the point where if I saw a native walking in the street I would have asked them for a couple bucks.

So there was a sioux woman sitting at a bus stop the other day & I looked at her...did the head nod thing...and kept walking. Then she runs up to me...and asks me for a couple bucks. I don't carry a lot of cash with me...so i was thinkin' how much i had...then she says...."i don't drink and I don't smoke...i just need to feed my kids some real food."

I just gave her all the cash i had - $11 - 'cuz u gotta have faith sometimes and help a native out right:)

There's a story about homeless natives in Seattle in Sherman Alexie's book Ten little Indians.........

so yup...i been thinking about homeless folks a lot lately....just thought i'd tell a story real quick:D

The story had been printed in the paper.. I can't vouch that he pulled in that much EVERY year, but at least that year he had. There are alot of good hearted people here and regardless what the folks are actually using the money for, they give and give and give, so it really does'nt sound that far fetched if you see the amount of people I do handing out a buck here, ten there.

Now this one guy though on my way to a powwow really kinda cracked me up cause he was wearing a sign that said, "I'll be honest, I need a drink." And he was smiling up a storm.. however I did'nt see anyone hand him any cash LOL.

Damn Kool Breeze u read my mind....they're lazy these days!!! I've seen way to many of those "Fox 5 undercover" shows where they follow the so called "homeless" after beggin around & come to find out the majority of them run to a PHAT FANCY car parked somewhere behind a shopping center.....next i'd imagine they whip out thier celli & hit up thier fellow hussla & brag about the dough they racked in while sittin in the MickeyD's drive thru!.......
When i go on travels i always use my favorite excuse when gettin hit up for $$$ "Hey, i support my local homeless...no cash for you!"

But what about that homeless dude in "Bruce Almighty" now i woulda bought that clever cat a samich each day....

Anything that a person does should be done to the best of their abilities. Needless to say, this goes for being a bum also. A bum has to work hard to fine tune his/her skills in order to get the best return.
Dressing the part is easy but they must always bathe in order to access the community in which they do business with. Yes, it is a business. No one wants to get close to a rancid individual.
Being unshaven also seems to work well for them.

Keeping fit? Well, I would say that a slim bum would do much better than an obese bum. Obesity tells us that the bum has a little more intake than the regular bum so I tend to be a little more giving to a skinny bum.
Footwear is important. It has to be comfy yet not too exclusive. Walking is a big part of panhandling.

Then, there's supplies like toothpaste, mouthwash and the like, so their appearance and smell of booze doesn't deter prospective clientele.

It's a job with enormous resposibilities. Being on time is very important. Otherwise, the next guy might get the upperhand during rush hour traffic.
Location, location, location. Any business person will tell you how important that is. A good bum will choose a location in a high traffic area but must select an area not within anothers jurisdiction. Bums are very territorial.

So, you see, a bums life is not easy. There are many factors in determining a bums success or lack of it.

I was in Toronto last fall and had this guy tell me that his friend takes in $200 - $300 a day on average.

I think I'm in the wrong business.

Talking

Kiwehnzii you know them well! LOL jk. Anywayz- we have a whole bunch here downtown. Some used to come into my work all smelly and barefooted and ask if we want to by any M&M's from their church. I'm thinking yeah your coming from Church. I felt bad for the guy cuz he looked like he was starving. But HELLO there is a homeless shelter downtown. But I gave him a dollar and told him to keep the M&M's. But when I lived with my aunt, she had LA Corona (her liquor store) It was right downtown and it was a bad area. And those homeless people came in there all the time trying to sell watches and other shyt. Actually we got to know this one guy and nicknamed him Crook (lol spelling?) Cuz he always stole from people walkin on the streets. But I wouldn't talk to him on the other side of the Bullet Proof glass window. There is also a white guy we call hunchback cuz he has a huge huge humpback, but that guy is craza! So I rather help the black guy out (crook) than the white guy (hunchback) Cuz white people can get things easier and be accepted more.

i was riding the train downtown one day talkin' on my cell & "reading" the paper when a homeless guy (who i had seen beg his way down the car) interrupted me... began to beg - i just shook my head "no" and when i got off the train and on to another line - he turned around and asked me AGAIN!
i was like "geeeeeeeze"... i started to think he was following me until he remained on the train and i got off (whew)...
besides if he can afford a train ride then he's headed SOMEWHERE!

Yes, alot of the homeless here are alaska native, a few of them are my hubby's own relations. I've never had a problem with them being rude. It's most always been with the white homeless here. Another time when my husband and I went to the dump; a man my kids refer to as the "potato sack guy" came over to our truck to ask if we had cedar? I told him no, not today; so he suddenly started slapping himself in the head several times. That's the fastest we've ever unloaded our truck at the dump.

Actually the only dude I ever give spare change to is Vinny at Dick's in Spokane. Anyone who has been to Dick's often in Spokane, WA knows Vinny, he doesn't ask for the money, people just give him their change.

This is a funny thread. LOL. I noticed that too, I was thinking daaaaaayum when I kept noticing beggars on the corners would be walking up and down the corner, looking right into our cars. Then they would get all pi$$ed off, some of em shake their fists at ya, some of em try to bytch ya out.

I don't think I've met a rude one here yet... not to say there are'nt any... just that most of them hold up signs and either you give or you don't... I've rarely been asked for money outright and usually i just tell them the truth.. I have no cash, i've just walked out of walmart and now I'm broke LOL!

I was reading about this homeless woman in Montreal.... It was winter time... and ya know how cold it gets... anywhoo she froze to death. Sad huh... and to think she was carrying around thousands and thousands of zhoonia in her bag.

I always feel really guilty when I keep walking... If I see a nish on the streets tho.. I'll give what I can.

Not that many homeless people that I see around these parts. Now there is one particular place when you come off 64 to Rocky Mount that they are there with signs. If not a sign they will just come up to your car window and beg. I just make sure that my car window is up, my door is locked, and I totally ignore them. I worked hard, to get from the pow-wow to back home with the gas prices at the time. I'm glad they are going back down again.

I live in Canada's Aboriginal Capital and it's hard to see our people on the street begging for money. My work is located in the downtown area, prime spot for the panhandlers. I see them everywhere. At first I would give them a dollar or small change, pretty soon it got to be annoying.

I am sorry that they are in that situation, and I believe in sharing what you have. But I worked my butt off in school and work, that's how I got to be where I am now. I don't think my dollar is going to make a difference in changing the direction of their life. So now I just tell them, "Sorry, I can't help you".

FYI....the panhandlers are worse here than in TO. I noticed that right away during a recent visit.
