What are people recording with?

This may be kind of a simple question but I would appreciate any input that you all may have.
Recently I have been thinking about buying a recording device of some kind for recording at powwows and other places,I was wondering. What do people use to record drum songs live other than a regular microphone?
Yes I'm a little behind technologically,I was told a hand held digital recorder was one way,but the guy wasn't really sure about a drum.
I know you can record with an ipod, does this work and if so how well?and which ones are best?
Thanks for your answers and suggestions!!

Handheld recorders usually work fine, those being the ones made by like ZOOM, which you can pick up at a GuitarCenter or SamAsh music store, not the kind you buy for recording a class lecture. I, personally, usually am doing the sound so I just plug a laptop (with my Lexicon box) or recording deck into the board and store it on a hard drive.

Thank you Toolbox,If you don't mind my asking, What do you do for a living? You really seem to know this stuff!
Have you ever heard of Musicians Friend? it is an instrument, music technology, etc supplier.Their catalog has digital recorders,I would assume that the ones they sell are made for music recording.

I work for a production company in post-production, however my main background is in broadcast engineering. I went to school and got my B.A. in TV/Film production.

As for Musician's Friend, I have heard of them, they were bought by Guitar Center back in 2000 (I think it was 2000). So they pretty much sell the same stuff. Guiat Center is great and their staff usually is friendly, depending on the location lol. I always recommend trying your local music store before the corporate owned ones. For instance my local store sold me my guitar (Ibanez S470) for $575, a bit less than the $585 they originally wanted and way less than what guiatcenter, samash, or musiciansfriend wanted, which was $650.

If you tell me your budget I may see what they are offering and recommend a product, but it is best to go to an instrument store to get a second opinion, this goes the same with almost anything. I do the same when people ask me about buying an HD camera or computer.

Yes, looking at the "local"[they are 45 minutes away ] music store is a good idea. The owner got my mom her cello and worked out a deal on it,my brother also got his guitar from them.Come to think of it the chromatic tuner came from them too!!Thank you for all your help,Amigokumeyaay and Toolbox,I will talk to my mom about some more about the digital recorder deal and let you know what happens.
Our Musicians Friend catalog came too,I'm not sure if we've ever called them, but if needs be I might give that a try as well.

OK so now we have come up with this possibility,it should work for what I want and also for my brother,he is the camera man for a local public access show and they need a better sound recording apparatus on a budget.THey do a lot of field recording it's just him and the guy that produces and interviews people.

YouTube - Cello Chat: Zoom H2 Handy Recorder

My mom watches this guy's cello playing tips, and this came up recently.Toolbox had mentioned Zoom,I don't know if this is what he was talking about.
Any how this is the recording find of the week, tell me if you have any thoughts.

Seems like a decent device, 4 mics and multiple files so if you chose to record the background and then later you decide you didn't like it you can just delete it. I listened to one of the videos he (the cello palyer) posted that he recorded using it and it sounded great especially for youtube's compression. You will want to keep an eye on the audio level meter to make sure you don't peak because when some of them drums get going they can put out some pretty high dbspl.

(dbspl = decibles sound pressure level)

As he said in the video you will want to get a larger capacity SD card, probably a 8GB will do so you don't have to keep offloading and erasing all the time, and see if you can get a Lexar brand card at either class 4 or 6 should do, the higher the class of SD card the faster the card can read and write data, it can be usually found as a number with in a small circle on the card. You chould also get the rubberized case, because based on several reviews people are saying that the plastic seems not to be of the highest quality, then again what is these days.

I use my hand-held digital camera. However, I put in a super-memory card, so I have the capability to record about an hour's worth of footage.
