Hello everyone. I have been reading numerous things on the boards the past few days. I am hoping that I don't generate negative response or opinion. I am 24 years old. Growing up, I was always told by my grandmother (who died when I was 15) about our Native American ancestors. I'm not coming here like other people, and like other things I've heard. My grandmother never told me any baloney about a Cherokee Princess in our family background...and when she would inform people of her genealogy, they would never fail for the most part to inform HER of a Cherokee Princess/Chief/King/Warrior ...and one time in the Goodwill she actually got pretty irate when someone claimed one of their ancestors was the ''Grandmaster of the Muscogee Cherokee Tribe''. At any rate, she began extensive research into our family tree about a year before she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I have NO idea what software she used (this was when instead of having DSL or Cable the ''thing'' was to have two phone lines, one for talking, one for the dial-up internet!) I do know that via my maternal great-grandfather (and my grandmothers father) I have Salzburger roots, the Salzburgers were religious dissenters expelled from Salzburg, Austria who settled in colonial GA...OT, but I just figured I'd say.) The Indian comes in via my maternal great grandmother, (my grandmothers mother). Because the Salzburgers are so well documented, my Grandmother was able to trace that side of the family tree back to the 1500's. Which to me, was amazing. She contacted my great-uncle in Oklahoma about help tracing the Indian side of the family...and about a month later is when she found out she had cancer. I was very close to my grandmother, and this was the first devastating loss I have ever went through. I had lost people before, but never had it hurt so bad as when I lost my granny. Once again, off topic...but anyway. Skip ahead to this year, I lost my maternal grandfather. Again to terminal cancer. The *itch* to see what Indian blood there was, and to what degree really started again. My grandfather always said that HIS mother was Choctaw. People always asked my grandfather if he was Greek...LOL. I am wondering, for people who weren't born into the tribe and enrolled later in life like me, how did you start your journey? What resources did you use? My great-grandmother's maiden name was Sheppard and my OTHER great-grandmother's maiden name was Locke. I have found both family names listed on the Dawes Roll ... If I were to sign up for ancestry.com, is that reliable software to trace my great-grandmothers parents? I have asked all my immediate relatives what they remember, and information is scarce. I do believe that my Great-grandmother was born in Yemasee, SC while my other great-grandmother was born in Samson, AL...but that's all the information I have. If I typed that in, would ancestry.com be able to help me find more records? This is a very personal thing for me, but I readily accept that there's a chance I'll never be able to connect to an ancestor on the Dawes Roll. The last thing I want to be is a Wannabe or a Twinkie... any advice or help ANY of you have, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much.

Welcome to the site and hope you have fun.
As for the search on your family. While ancestry is a good site, they don't have everything but they do have alot. I would suggest that you go to your local library, many libraries have ancestry for free to their patrons.
Then starting with your mother, work your way back through documentation. Finding: Birth, marriage and death records. These can always help to trace a person to where they originally came from and using census records is a big help as well.
If your ancestor was on the Dawes Roll, there are about 5 Tribes through that Roll and they are all in OK, so that might be a place to look as well. But after you've traced your ancestor's and can verify that the ones on that roll are actually yours and not people that happen to have the same name or last name as your own family, that's not a match. You have to actually match a person to the person on that Roll.
Good luck
