  • "Born to any member of the community"

I was just wondering if anyone else had run into this as well as people's thoughts on this issue :)

I am of mixed blood (Potawatomi and Menominee) and I am currently in the process of trying to enroll with the Potawatomi Nation. I meet the blood quantum requirement but am being held up by a clause in the constitution. Article II section (c) states: All persons of one-fourth (1/4) degree or more Potawatomi Indian blood born to any member of the Community. I meet blood requirements but not the "born to any member of the community" part. My father was enrolled with the Menominee Nation and unfortunately I do not meet their blood quantum requirements...

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated on this issue because I am facing a tough situation here.

I don't think this is mere semantics. It appears that they want members who ARE BORN TO A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY. In other words, they do not want outsiders. They want people who are children of already established members.

I don't see any way around this. If you fulfill no requirements, you are indeed, tribeless.

But you are not alone, there are people who are enrolled with very little to NO NDN blood and full blooded NDNs with no enrollment. If those are the laws, then you cannot change them, and you can't go back and change the circumstances of your birth.

As far as I see it, unless there is some other clause in there that brings exception to this one, it appears you cannot be a member.

I thank you for your reply though I must confess I am glad that my family has never treated me as "an outsider." There's more to it, though I did not feel that getting into the politics of enrollment was important here. I do wonder about the long term implications of denying people enrollment because of the choices of their parents (like which tribe they chose to enroll in). What will happen in the long run to the bloodline if less and less people are allowed to enroll?

The inevitable ! No more Indians ! But before that happens , the few with the casinos will get rich.....
I believe blood quantums are the governments way to breed us out of existance !

They say blood is thicker than water ! Now maple syrup is thicker than blood , so are pancakes more important than family ?

There are "Elders" and there are "Olders". Being the second one doesn't make the first one true !

Somebody is out there somewhere, thinking of you and the impact you made in their life.
        It's not me....I think you're an idiot !

Of course, your family will treat you like a family. A tribe will treat members as a nation will, and that means that in a nation, the people who do belong get to decide who else may belong. The Menominee decided your father had enough blood, but you did not. The Potawatomi decided that they only wanted children of their communities with a certain level of blood to become members.

Are either looking to expand enrollment. NO.

And wardancer is correct. With all of this, in time, there will be no NDNs.

It is sometimes hard to grasp when you have a father who is enrolled, but in reality, you are a Heinz 57 American. You are, like many people in America a mix of many bloods and many heritages. There is nothing wrong with that.

You are a little Menominee and a quarter Potawatomi and I don't know what else, but it appears you are a child of the Great American melting pot. Folks want to cling to a portion of this or that piece, but the truth of the matter is you are not an exclusive member of one but a product of all of your bloodlines.

All our parents made choices that we live with today. Your parents made some choices that adversely affect your wishes at this time. So the best solution is to accept that you cannot change anything. I'm sorry, you probably didn't want to hear that.

The residency requirement will eventually deplete the tribal membership.

As we internalize the reservation system and codify it as tradition.

Which is the highest form of brainwashing.

                  No Heinz 57 over here!

What are you talking about???? I am no mutt, Heinz 57 American as you called it. I am biracial...half and half. I have more that 1/4 Potawatomi blood...I would appreciate it if you stopped making assumptions and posting comments based on those assumptions. Thank you, and you are right, I do not like your posts, they come across as rude since they are inaccurate.

I am a member of The C/A's , yes we have casinos and we're doing well. If you knew anything about the system you would know that the eventualities are already in motion. Less and less Indians. Right now we get a decent per-cap from the casinos and we get one from oil and gas. The Tribe re-invests most of the profits back into Tribal Programs. Some tribes do not. They give it all to members and then as some would interpret as greed , have gone back through the rolls and removed some families that had been on the rolls for generations. That was the point of the post. If you are too ignorant to understand this , then you shouldn't be a member here and I'd be glad to help you on your way to being banned !

You indicate you are at least 1/4th Pot , then you say you are 1/2 ndn. I was just wondering what the rest was ?

Why? Just curious as to why you are curious...since it doesn't affect my enrollment or the question I posted here? :)
