Good evening everyone, so I got custody of my daughter 2 years ago after a lengthy legal battle and received her last paper work from the court when I saw a box with the words ("Child's American Indian child status denied by parent"). I know her mother is native American, but she never told me to which tribe she belong and I could not get any information out of the court because the hearings were over and done. I have being doing research after research until I hit a brick wall about my daughters grandmother(deceased) as her place of birth was in Orange, California and there was no records of her parents. So I am stuck as of now and I hope I can find out, so my daughter can finally learn more about her roots and learn about her tribe. Thank you in advance if anyone know anymore resources and with tips on locating her tribe.

Good luck in your endeavor. I'M sure there is no easy road.
I'm a little confused. How did you skip over the parents to find a grandparent? To be sure, there are branches from the grandma.
Why must I feel like that..why must I chase the cat?

Sorry for the confusion, but I skipped because the grandmother is the only native american in the family and her daughter (my daughter's mother) is half native american, so this is where I hit a brick road as listed below.
Name: Dianna L Montiel
Event Type: Birth
Event Date: 17 Dec 1961
Event Place: Orange, California, United States
Gender: Female
Mother's Name: Rios
being on many ancestry websites and they all tell me the same, so beyond the surname Rios I have no other idea. Except that the Acjachemen nation shares spanish surnames, but without knowing where her parents Rios was born I cant be certain of her tribe.Last edited by Fbaeza; 11-20-2014, 01:12 PM.

Do you have an connections with the Grandfather? If he is still living, he would be your only link to knowing what nation the Grandmother was from. 1961 is not that far back so there should be records somewhere and the Grandfather should know where he met her and where she comes from.

If they are part of a band in California who also happens to be in casino business, I would imagine that they would do anything they can to exclude your daughter from even being a part of their enrollment. And you know the reasons why.
The only hope you have is if there is someone with a high enough authority that knows of your daughter and her mother. However, your daughter's mother probably already built a wall around that possibility.
It all comes back to you. I don't know how long you knew her mother, but it sounds like you have every little information on her. Now I am not an expert on relationships, but it seems like you two didn't share enough background with each other to begin with.
I am sure you can do a background check on her mother and trace her roots that way, but I don't know how that is done legally.

yup your absolute right that they will exclude her and I don't trust those background online checks, I heard many bad stories with them. It seems improbable but not impossible, my daughter needs to know about her culture and what her roots are. I think I will continue teaching her about native Americans in general until I break this mystery about her grandparents origins.

According to what they told me a long time ago is that she moved from Orange to Texas in the late 80s and before that she was married in California before her divorce and relocation. There is not much to go on, but thanks everyone for trying to help I appreciated it.

by dove947My Great-Grandmother was possibly one of the children the government took away from her native family and adopted out to a white family. I only have her adopted name and parents, where she lived with them, who she married, her children, etc. How do I find her real name, birthdate and parents' names?...

by fubarHi, I am a mixed breed and I am a veteran. I have been trying to discover information about my maternal great grand parents, as well as, my paternal ancestry on both sides. The problems, at least on the maternal side are two-fold. My great grandmother (my mother's father's mother)was Cherokee (we think)....

To start at the beginning, her father left when she was 6 months old and we only see him maybe once a year, and he is not very informative. I was always told by his family...
